The Binding of Isaac: Rebirth – A Must Play Game

It takes guts to make a game based on a story from the Bible. Just based on that, I commend the efforts of Edmund McMillen and Florian Himsl for exploring a realm video games rarely visit. What is astounding is just how well the game came out. The original Binding of Isaac was one of the first indie games I bought after I built my PC. I loved the macabre themes roped together by the desire to escape the dark dungeon. Many hours were spent crying at the decrepit creatures, a few of which deeply disturbed me. Yet, despite the dark themes, religious tone, and staggering difficulty, I considered Binding of Isaac to be a masterpiece that all gamers should try. It actually led me down the path of playing other rogue-like games, quickly becoming one of my favorite genres.

This devilishly simple flash game quickly became one of the most popular indie titles of the past few years. Then, a twisted video with puppets revealed something amazing, Isaac was getting an upgrade.

Binding of Isaac: Rebirth expands the original game in staggering ways. Before, Isaac was stuck to exploring simple square rooms; Rebirth can now generate larger rooms. This opens up the game tremendously since the camera, instead of being fixed, has to follow Isaac around. Another impressive change is how smooth the game runs in the new engine. Pixels take over where Flash drawings had been. This change seemed like an obvious choice, knowing how much the indie scene loves pixel animations. It gives the world a bit more depth. Nothing has really changed as far as how the game plays; however, I did find the job to be an easier task with the PS4 controller, especially while using both analog sticks. Of course, the game has also gained more unlockable content, items, trinkets, and challenges. It will take a long time to get everything, so completionists beware.

Everything I loved in the original has become even better. The simple but layered story gives players a reason to keep trying. Death is permanent in rogue-like games, which if not pulled off correctly, can be frustrating; I never felt that way with Isaac. The mechanics are responsive, simple, and if players die, it’s their fault. Sure, sometimes the item drops lack the power Isaac needs to feel safe, but I rarely blamed the items for my death. After dying, starting up a new run takes seconds, unlike another game I played last month.

Occasionally, Isaac can find friends in the Basement. Like Franco here.

Basically, gamers who love the 2D Zelda games will feel right at home. It is a challenging and rewarding experience right from the beginning.

What fascinates me even more than the gameplay is the layers of narrative at work. One can spend years just taking apart the various symbols, creatures, and items in an academic sense. In fact, I’m pretty sure I’ve done a little of that while I was in college. While I won’t touch on everything I’ve come up with, due to the nature of this article, I will briefly mention the feelings I had when beating the game for the first time.

For starters, I’ve never beat the original. In fact, I don’t think I made it to level five. In Rebirth, however, I was able to defeat Mother in my first attempt. I don’t know if it’s because I was given amazing items or my skills have improved since the original. One thing has stuck with me: all of the creatures Isaac faces are twisted things, many reveling in their own sins and filth. Even Mother has been affected by her pursuit of Isaac, becoming one of the most grotesque final bosses in gaming history. I felt sorry for this woman, blinded by faith. What’s even more tragic is what Isaac has to become to defeat her.

Isaac starts out as an innocent child, naked and afraid of the darkness around him. As more items are acquired, his physical appearance changes so drastically that by the end, Isaac barely resembles what he used to be. That’s what shocked me the most about Rebirth. I had to become monstrous to defeat the monsters of the basement. What does that leave for Isaac upon his return to the world? Would he instead just roam the halls and the darkness? Needless to say my initial victory cry and excitement was plowed over with sadness and remorse.

This type of game design is rare, a true gem in an ever-growing sea of titles.

All in all, everyone should try this game. Okay, maybe not children, but all gamers should give it a try. The game is cheap compared to the shooters that will soon flood the market and is free this month if you have PS Plus and a PS4. Everyone else that owns a Windows PC, Mac, Linux machine or PS Vita will have to pay $14.99.

Also, in honor of the game’s release, I also made a quick commentary video over on Forever Classic.

Whaaaaaaaaat? Two Female Main Characters? A quick look at Redux Ark

On October 29, Hyper Games announced its new exploration, survival adventure called Redux Ark.

Redux Ark takes place  in the year 2039. The last bee on Earth—yea they’re important—died 200 years ago, which started a domino effect of doom on Earth. After discovering a twin planet, Genema, the people of Earth made one last attempt to survive by building a ship called the Redux Ark. The plan was to travel to the twin planet; collect plants, animals and any other organic matter; then take it back to Earth.

Unfortunately, as the Redux Ark closed in on Gemena’s atmosphere, the crew lost control of the ship and crash landed on Gemena. Only three people survived the crash: a scientist, a soldier and a pathfinder. Now, along with collecting plants and animals, the survivors must also collect all the pieces of their ship and fix it, while fighting off the unknown dangers on Gemena.

Even though the announcement was paired with only a concept teaser trail, I’m excited. This game has a lot of potential, and knowing so little about the game keeps my imagination going. I’m also excited about  the three main characters because two of them are women. It feels weird to get excited about something that should be a normal occurrence, but that’s where gaming is right now.

Usually the cast is dominated by men (e.g. Assassins Creed Unity, GTA V, Left 4 Dead 1 & 2 etc.), and female gamers (if they care) have to settle for the one and only woman on the team—even the female choices in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare are slim compared to the male options. Luckily, Hyper Games has decided not to take the typical route.

The estimated time of arrival is 2016. I can’t wait to see what the people of Hyper Games come up with!

Giga At Tsubasacon 2014: Eien Strife

There are two things that I look forward to in October: my birthday and Tsubasacon. Lucky for me those two things happen on the same weekend. It’s probably the only anime convention in West Virginia and it is becoming one of my favorites. Last year I got to hang with David Vincent, the voice of Grimjow from Bleach. He even said some things as his characters for Forever Classic. That was a great weekend.

This time around, I lacked a video camera. So, instead of my usual Youtube coverage, I wanted to at least give you a peek at what you missed this year.

Out of spontaneous curiosity, I stuck around the main event room for a concert that I had no idea about. Eien Strife was set to perform, headlining the music for the weekend. I saw the band earlier that day, cosplaying original characters. I didn’t think much of it, but I did like the neon colored strings on their instruments. When I stepped into that concert, though, I was blown away.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOHRJO2kMqY&w=640&h=360]

Eien Strife is a group of four adventurers who hail from the land of Terina. The heroes come from different walks of life, but they work together to bring down monsters, explore new places, and gain experience. Each concert is one of their side quests. This concert had the heroes pursue a Sacred Ring of Fire to keep the evil Phoenix from breaking its seal and destroying the forests.

Their music reminds me a lot of Paramore, if they sang songs written for Dragonforce with a little Rise Against mixed in. It’s fast paced with complicated notes and a driving rhythm. On stage, they sometimes perform a Team Attack, usually between the bassist and guitarist. For one song, they stood side by side, guitars crossed and made each other’s chords while the other played. Their second attack formed a tower of power as the bassist sat on the guitarist’s shoulders. These were extremely cool to watch and the band seemed to be having a blast.

Speaking of fun, Eien Strife also does special segments in between songs. A video was projected onto a screen that the band members would duck behind. Each act was a sprite animation, complete with guest appearances by Nathan Explosion and Megaman. While I couldn’t see all of the action, I found these breaks to be hilarious. Eien Strife also boasted that each side quest was tailored to the event.

I also hope that they eventually record their cover of Still Alive, one of gaming’s most famous songs. Their version is amazing.

I went in not knowing who these cosplayers were, but I left wanting their music. I’m pretty sure I was one of the first to buy a sweet wooden thumb drive loaded with their songs. Never have I seen a band that has as much fun or energy as Eien Strife. 1981969_685480128160648_6853774634298305467_n The band also created a few panels. Being me, I went to the Retro Video Game Challenge. It was here that I got to talk to the band personally. They’re all great people to be around; however, they’re also evil because they made me play Ninja Gaiden 3 on the NES with three people on one controller. We made it to the boss at least.

If you ever get a chance to see Eien Strife in concert, don’t be a fool, go and have a blast. Check them out Twitter and Facebook!

Hive Jump Preview

I was given a chance to try out an early build of Graphite Lab’s Hive Jump. The following preview is based on what I have played so far and what I infer from their Kickstarter campaign.

Some of the greatest Science Fiction films are Aliens and Starship Troopers. These movies are filled with rough and tough mercenaries with big guns and bigger attitudes, blasting away monsters that come in droves. Hive Jump is inspired by these elements and is shaping up to be an awesome game.

HIVE JUMP SCREEN SHOT

Pixels have taken over PC gaming since Minecraft’s success and I couldn’t be happier. Hive Jump looks great, combining that beloved retro style with modern techniques. The game utilizes a powerful lighting tool known as Sprite Lamp, adding to the overall tone and atmosphere of the game. Sprite Lamp, the backgrounds, the environments, and the sheer ferocity of the enemies is molding Hive Jump into an interesting piece of Sci-Fi.

Players will be donning the persona of the typical space marine, lugging around heavy armor and heavier weaponry. Each weapon is upgradeable with the goo collected from fallen foes. Adding to the armory are upgrades scattered throughout the maps. Players will have to balance their weaponry while fighting off wave after wave of nasty bugs. There are also plans for a strategic campaign mode that lets players plan out each precise strike.

What I found most interesting about the demo is the speed at which the game attacks the player. While this may not be the case in the final version, I found myself quickly overwhelmed on single-player mode, but that just made me hungry for more bug goo. Luckily, on a respawn, players blast away aliens from the sheer force of their drop into the hive. This is similar to how arcade beat-em-ups would treat coming back to life, and the mechanic fits well into the theme and the gameplay.

CBS, interestingly, offers a mentor program (in fact, usa cheap viagra they offer two mentors) for television writing. There are numerous schools of thought mastercard tadalafil regarding psychotherapy and depending on your therapists’ own educational background and beliefs, they may follow one or more approach: Psychoanalytic based on the rehabilitation of thoughts including free associations, fantasies and dreams Behaviour Therapy focuses on changing patterns of behaviour to improve emotional responses and interactions with meals. Kamagra – A Powerful Drug Solution of Erectile pharmacy on line viagra Dysfunction (ED). HIVE JUMP CRYO GUN

Each weapon feels different and their upgrades are always a treat to use. Although, I did have a lot of trouble using the charge beam; it took way too much time to build into a lethal dose. As I mentioned earlier, these bugs don’t wait around, nope they filleted me out and waited for my clone to drop from the sky. Let’s just say I fed a lot of bugs on my first couple drops.

Unfortunately, the demo lacks the collecting and upgrading mechanics, but I can’t wait to see how those are implemented further. As the game is developed more and more weapon ideas are sketched out. I’m hoping to see TONS of unlockable content including weapons, areas, modes, and characters. Already there are plans to bring Bart from Aegis Defenders into the hives. Multiplayer should also prove to be great, but I hope to see something new come out of playing with friends that I haven’t seen already.

HIVE JUMP WITH AEGIS DEFENDERS

What impressed me was Graphite Lab’s love for other developers. The Hive Jump Kickstarter page actually holds several other games in development. Graphite Lab, unlike most developers, is actually spreading out the spotlight instead of the typical “Look at me and my game! Give me money!” stance. It is humbling to know that these developers aren’t necessarily out there to fill their pockets, at least alone. They’re willing to spread the joy of gaming, no matter who is making the game.

All in all, I can’t wait to see what else Hive Jump will have in store for players on its release. If you need me, I’ll be throwing grenades down the throats of murderous insects. Private Alex of the Giga 304th Battalion signing off.
