Week 8 NFC Recap

Panthers 31 (4-3) @ Buccaneers 13 (0-7)

Its true, its true!! These Carolina Panthers are 4-3 and in 2nd place in the NFC South. You saw that coming? I did not. Part of there early season success  as a team is that the 1st 7 games of the season, the defense has allowed zero 1st half touchdowns. Panthers running back Williams had 8 carries for 43 yards with his 1st TD of the season. QB Cam Newton handled business on the big stage. He had 50 rushing yards in the game with his 25th rushing TD of his career. That made him the 1st player in NFL history to get 50 or more passing TD’s and 25 or more rushing TD’s in a span of 3 seasons. Newton’s total tally for the game was 271 yards total with 3 TD’s. Wide Out T. Ginn had 5 receptions for 80 yards. Carolina is at home next week against the Falcons.

The Buccaneers are playing nothing less than stinky boo boo football. They played 7 games and lost all 7 of them. Quarterback M. Glennon went 30 of 51 for 275 yards with one touchdown. Running back M. James ran the ball 10 times for 39 yards. Wide receiver V. Jackson had 5 catches for 79 yards. Lets all wish the win less Buccaneers the best when the travel to Seattle next week.

Cowboys 30 (4-4) @ Lions 31 (5-3)

The Lions are very well in the mix in the NFC North. The Stafford to Johnson combination has to be the best in the NFL today. Speaking  of Calvin Johnson, he had 14 receptions for 329 yards and a touchdown. With that Johnson had his 5th career game with 200 plus yards receiving witch ties an NFL record. That was also the 2nd most receiving yards in a game all-time. Quarterback M. Stafford went silly with 488 yards passing on 33 of 48 completions with a touchdown with 2 interceptions. The running game was lead by Mr. Bush with 21 carries for 92 yards and a touchdown. The Lions will take this win and rest next week.

Don’t you just hate it when you lead a ball game then lose it at the end? Whelp, that actually happen. With that being said, the Cowboys still have chance to win the NFC East. Wide Receiver T. Williams had 2 catches for 64 yards and one TD. Williams now has 4 straight games with a TD. That is a Rookie record by the way. Wide out mate Dez Bryant had 3 receptions for 72 yards with 2 TD’s. Romo went 14 of 30 for 206 yards and 3 touchdowns passes. Randle ran the ball 14 times for 26 yards. The Boys will welcome the Vikings next week.

Bills 17 (3-5) @ Saints 35 (6-1)

The NFC South division leading  Saints offense is ranked 6th in the NFL. TE Jimmy Graham had 2 TD catches . Rookie WR Kenny Stills had caught 2 TD passes himself. Bress was cash money as usual going 26 of 34 for 332 yards with 5 touchdown passes on the day. New Orleans will keep it marching to the Meadowland  to play dem J-E-T-S  JETS! JETS! JETS!

Fred Jackson had 45 yards rushing and a touchdown. QB Thad Lewis had 234 yards passing with 3 turnovers. Threw the ball 39 times and completed 22 of those attempts with one touchdown pass and one interception. Now after the Bills get there ends handed to them by the Saints, next week they go home to face the undefeated Kansas City Chiefs. It should be a fun one……. for the Chiefs that is.

Giants 15 (2-6) @ Eagles 7 (3-5)

Nothing negative to report on the Giants for once. New York won there 1st road game in 8 trys.  Eli Manning didn’t throw an intersection! But the 2 time Superbowl champ didn’t throw a touchdown pass either. He went 25 of 39 for 246 yards. The G-Men can take this win and celebrate with a bye.

Then there are the Eagles. Coming to find out, Vick is still not healthy and was pulled from the game…….. again. Vick had 3 interceptions on the season with another in the game before before leaving. He also went 6 of 9 for 31 yards. This means QB Matt Barkley would have to come in the game in the 2nd quarter. Barkley went 17 of 26 for 158 yards and a pick. The Eagles have lost there last 10 games at home and haven’t scored an offensive TD in 8 quarters. With the Eagles quarterbacks being not healthy, not good or both, the Raiders have a chance to win at home in the O-A-K.

Falcons 13 (2-5) @ Cardinals 27 (4-4)

Matt Ryan is a quarterback Arizona likes to play apparently. They picked the man off 5 times alone last season. Rashad Johnson had 2 picks himself. I will get to Ryan in a moment. Andre Ellington ran the ball 15 times for 154 yards and a touchdown. 80 of those 154 yards was a touchdown run that is tied for the 3rd longest run in Cardinals history. In other history making news, Larry Fitzgerald became the youngest player to reach 800 career receptions at the age of 30. The man had 4 catches for 48 yards and a touchdown. So what will the Cardinals be doing next week? Resting.

The dirty birds have been nothing less than a mess. As for Mr. Ryan, 34 of 61 passing for 301 yards, one touchdown pass but 4 interceptions. The Falcons QB’s 1st 6 games of the season only recorded 3 INT’s by the way. Now the Falcons will travel back to the other side of America to visit a surprising Carolina Panthers team.

Packers 44 (5-2) @ Vikings 31 (1-6)

Aaron Rodgers  was on Que with his passing completions. 24 of 29 for 285 yards with 2 TD passes. Green Bay scored everytime they had the ball until there final possession that sealed there victory with a kneel down. The Packers will battle another division team known as the Chicago Bears next week at home.

Rookie WR Cordarrellle Patterson had an 109 yard TD return on the opening kickoff. That’s an NFL record. In other Viking news, Christian Ponder went 14 of 21 for 145 yards. Now the Vikings will take a road trip to Jerry’s world to face the Cowboys next week.

Seahawks 14 (7-1) @ Rams 9 (3-5)

The Seahawks continue to fly high even on the big stage of Monday Night Football. Sherman continues to catch passes like a receiver. He now has 4 interceptions on the season. Russell Wilson had 10 passes completed out of 18 attempts for 2 touchdowns. Now Seattle will go home to face the Buccaneers next week. I smell another win for the Seahawks………..

Besides the Rams overall losing the game, QB Kellen Clemens had 2 turnovers in the 1st half. Overall Clemens went 15 of 31 for 158 yards with 2 INT’s. As for the good news, St. Louis defense had 7 sacks. Chris Long had 3 sacks. Robert Quinn had 7 sacks on the season entering there PRIMETIME  contest. Quinn had 3 sacks himself on the night. Next week the Rams will welcome the Titans.

Grambling State is in the National spotlight………….. for the wrong reasons.

Since Anthony Andrews and yours truly will be on the air live tomorrow night on GIGA Net starting at 8 p.m., we will recap all of week 7 then. For this weeks blog I would like to focus on a arena of football that will be more exposed once the World Series has reached its end. I would like to shine some light (witch is not good)on Historically Black College and University.

Grambling State University has been the premiere of HBCU football since the days of the the late legendary Eddie Robinson. We fast forward to the 2013 football season at GSU, it is in MAJOR money trouble that has opened the door to other Hugh problems this season alone. When it comes to small schools like GSU, money has been a problem for many years. This year Grambling State has gotten national coverage because of lack of finance. Lets look at the hot mess that has occurred because for the Tigers money troubles.

*Like everyone else this season, Jackson State won against GSU, and wants to sue becuase of it. Jackson State won by forfeit because only 22 players traveled to Jackson, Mississippi last Saturday. That was JSU’s homecoming game that got cancelled. They expect at least 20,000 for the event annually. Now JSU wants to sue to get back all the money that was lost.

*GSU President Frank Pogue declared a state of Financial Emergency due to major budget cuts. Some critics has reach the conclusion of down sizing the football program to division III or shut the whole program down all together.

*Poor facilities plus long road trips plus former GSU QB and Superbowl MVP Doug Williams got fired two games in to the season (in witch the players still don’t know why by the way), all resulted in the players boycotting the university. They will return to practice this week in preparation for there home game against Texas Southern. While the players were in boycott mode, many started to wonder if the Tigers would finish out the season. The biggest game of the year for Grambling St. is against Southern University every Thanksgiving weekend in the Superdome on national tv (NBC). All we know for now is the that the Tigers are planning to play Texas Southern.

*If there are many good news to put on this story, the Southwestern Athletic Conference made it official that the university will not be fined for forfeiting there game against Jackson State. Like they have money to pay for it right?

If there is one thing I have notice in life, once you hit rock bottom, there is no place to go but up. Its just going to take sometime.

What the Heck? About the National Debt

At this moment the US owes China about $1.28 trillion, that’s right, $1,280,000,000,000.  This, however, only represents about 8% of the national debt.  China is the biggest overseas creditor.

The total debt to other parts of the federal government is $4.76 trillion which is 28.4% of the total debt.

The biggest creditor of the US is Social Security.  The trust funds contain US Treasury securities totaling $2.76 trillion.  It might seem unusual that the government owes money to other arms of the federal government.  The scary part about this is if the government defaults on the debt, no one actually knows how Social Security and Medicare checks would be affected.

Secretary of Treasury, Jack Lew, has said, “If we have insufficient cash on hand, it would be impossible for the United States of America to meet all of its obligations — including Social Security and Medicare benefits.” So basically, we have a problem and with no solution and no idea what will happen if we don’t fix it.

I don’t know how difficult it is to compromise and raise the debt limit, but no matter which party has the majority in any branch of government, the debt limit has been either raised or adjusted 78 times since 1960.

With everything going on and all the concerns, one thing is certain: Section 4 of the 14th Amendment forbids defaulting on the debt.  The text states: “The validity of the public debt of the United States, authorized by law, including debts incurred for payment of pensions and bounties for services in suppressing insurrection or rebellion, shall not be questioned. But neither the United States nor any State shall assume or pay any debt or obligation incurred in aid of insurrection or rebellion against the United States, or any claim for the loss or emancipation of any slave; but all such debts, obligations and claims shall be held illegal and void.”

The bottom line: if nothing changes, then the government can only spend what it makes, instead of spending more than it makes.  The budget and accounting books would HAVE to be balanced.  With an estimated $3 trillion in revenue coming into the government it will have to work with only that amount to pay for the interest on national debt ($240 billion), social security payments ($860 billion), Medicare and Medicaid ($860 billion), veteran benefits ($140 billion), and basic operating costs of government functions ($106 billion).  Leaving $800 billion to pay for transportation, education, retirement programs, defense spending, welfare spending, the affordable care act and much more.  The country will survive on a balanced budget, but there will be major spending cuts.

Week 6 AFC Recap

Packers @ Ravens
The 2-2 Packers flew to Baltimore looking for win number 3, while Baltimore at 3-2 are looking to stay over .500. The Ravens first score came in the form of a field goal in the 3rd quarter, which made it 16-3. Despite a 4th quarter comeback attempt by the Ravens, outscoring the Packers 14 to 3, the Pack held on to the victory with a Final score of 19-17. Injuries sustained by Randall Cobb and James Jones are not as serious as they appeared to be at the time, which is good news for the packers. Both Rodgers and Flacco threw for over 300 yards, while Eddy Lacy ran for 120, and Ray Rice was limited to 34. Ravens are in a key division game for the Steelers this week, as neither of them can afford to lose this game, and both hoping that the Packers defeat the Browns to give them a shot at the division.

Bengals @ Bills
Thad Lewis gets the start for an injured Manuel, and at the End of the 3rd quarter, the Bengals seemed to have this game in hand with a 14 point lead. The Bills said “Not so fast” as they outscore the Bengals 14-0 in the fourth quarter, to force overtime. Bills win the coin toss, but fail to get out of their own endzone. A 28 yard punt return put the Bengals in Field Goal range to take the win, 27-24. Bengals advance to 4-2 sitting on top of the AFC North, and have a tough game against the Lions next week. The Bills drop to 2-4, and have a division game in Miami against the cooling-off Dolphins, who have lost their last 2 in a row.

Rams @ Texans
Texans fans have been very unhappy with the play of Matt Schaub, who holds the record for most consecutive games with a pick-6. Late in the 3rd, Schaub leaves the game with an ankle injury, and the crowd cheered! Here comes T.J. Yates. Yates bring the Texans to the 6 yard line, throws a pass just short of the endzone, which is picked off, and yes, returned 98 yards for a TD, and yet, another consecutive game with a pick-6 for the Texans. Be careful what you wish for Texans fans….
The Rams win this game comfortably, 38-13, and are now 3-3 while the Texans drop to 2-4

Raiders @ Chiefs
The Chiefs look to remain undefeated as they host the Raiders, who have won consecutive games at Arrowhead stadium since the Al Davis Day’s. Not this Sunday however. Jamal Charles had 78 yards rushing, and had 2 TD’s to go along with them. The Chiefs breeze through this one 24-7 and remain perfect at 6-0, Raiders 2-4.

Steelers @ Jets
Steelers are still looking for their first win coming into this one, and Geno Smith is looking to stay hot and keep pace for the division. The Steelers looked like the Steelers of old as they win this one comfortably, 19-6. The Steelers defense did not give up a TD, and intercepted the rookie QB 2 times. Steelers are now 1-4 and have a tough division test against the Ravens this week, while the Jets fall to 3-3 and host the 5-1 Patriots.

Saints @ Patriots
What a game this turned out to be! Sloppy at times with bad throws and dropped passes, but failed to disappoint viewers. One of the most exciting last 3 minutes so far this year, as the Saints take the lead, and then get the ball back late in the game, with Patriots only having 2 timeouts (or did they?!). All the Saints had to do was take time off the clock, but bad clock management gave the ball back to the Patriots . Tom Brady then threw an interception Keenan Lewis, and once again, Saints just have to run the clock out, but could not, as the Patriots get the ball back with no time outs (after taking 3, when they appeared to only have 2). Tom Brady ran the no huddle, drove right down the field, and threw a strike to the rookie WR Kenbrell Thompkins for a TD with 5 seconds left. Patriots advance to 5-1, and hand the Saints their first loss and make them 5-1.

Colts @ Chargers
Chargers are fighting to stay alive in a division with the Broncos and Chiefs both undefeated, and advance to 3-3 after defeating the Colts, who drop the 4-2. Colts are not in danger in that division, so this was a much bigger win for Rivers and the Chargers, than it was a loss for the Colts.

Jaguars @ Broncos
Broncos continue to be undefeated, as the world knew they would, facing the Jaguars. Jaguars put up a fight in the first half, but coach Fox and Peyton Manning ran away with it in the 2nd half, winning 35-19. The Bronco’s are 6-0, while the Jaguars mirror them at 0-6.

GIGA Adventures: New York Comic Con 2013

GIGA ME Staff PicCrash Pad: Geek Memoirs
By: Jacques A. Montemoiño

Far beyond the level of excitement to be expected from such a thrilling event as the New York Comic Convention, is the challenge of trying to accurately express how exhilarating my time there was in “words” but I will do my best.

During my journalism phase, I’ve had the privilege of covering a few local conventions yet I had never been to a New York Comic Con or any comic book convention of this immensity and so I was anxious, nervous, and hopeful all at once.   Even though I am a native New Yorker, I had not been there in many years and the idea that this monolithic convention that was happening in a place I once called home only added to the buzz and anticipation.

I flew out of Atlanta Ga. USA up to LaGuardia airport in New York, NY early arriving midday and was greeted by Ms. Jenkins a company rep holding a sign with my name.  After looking over my itinerary, I settled into my NY branch office and promptly I ventured out to the 2013 New York Comic Convention via the A train; the smell of subway and the all too familiar rocking and rumblings of the train I once road as a young man, filled me with warm memories reminiscent of my youth.  The murmur of the hundreds coupled with the gentle sway almost carried me off in to the sleep realms, yet I fought the urge to get comfortable, lean back, and nod off.   As the downtown bound train got closer and closer to 34th street, I began seeing more and more travelers dressed in very familiar outfits and costumes indicative of one of the geek cultures most prevalent pass-times: cosplay.  I knew I was going in the right direction once Pikachu sat next me.
Off of the public transit, maneuvering through thick crowds, up the stairs and on to the busy sidewalks, I was faced with the Empire State Building and the breezy Manhattan streets.  Only a handful of blocks away from the Jacob Javitz Center, where the convention was being held, the walking slowed to a snail’s pace as hundreds tried to make their way down the narrow sidewalk which was apparently under construction and had partially extended into the streets, only to be sectioned off by a temporary barrier that saved me from sharing my passage with cars.  Four blocks away, then three blocks away, and then finally, two blocks away I hit “pay dirt”.  Off in the distance, I saw the top of the convention center when I looked ahead and then I was completely surrounded by hundreds of Comic Con enthusiasts and cosplayers at ground level of the Center.  IMG_0237The smell of New York franks, Shish kebabs, and Halal food filled my nostrils.  “I should eat before I go in” I reckoned and proceeded to order one of each.

I turned the final corner and beheld the magnificence that summons Geeks from all over to this one location and they came out in mass.

I entered the building, and even at 6 feet 6 inches, I felt miniscule and easily lost in the enormity of the environment aNYCC2013 Resized 6nd the crowds of thousands upon thousands.  Everywhere I looked, there were my favorite super heroes posing for pictures and some even adorable enough to stop me in my tracks, as if I were a young boy who was brand new to this Geek World.

The main show floor was packed with hundreds of exhibitors representing some of the most iconic companies that are cornerstones of our unique sub-culture. Bandai, Nintendo, Warner Brothers, Dark Horse Comics, Intel, as well as a slew of hundreds of independent companies—all privileged to share the floor with such industry giants.  With the crowds almost at a standstill, I tried to get as many images as my Canon 70D could muster. IMG_0206Me, as an extroverted person, engaged with a solid 61% of the exhibitionists I came across and, in one weekend, I gathered cards from representatives from many of the most impressive businesses in attendance including some of the development staff for the new Batman Arkham Origins.  http://www.hdwallpapers.in/walls/batman_arkham_origins_video_game-wide.jpg
I even met two gentlemen from Geek Therapy that were educators and therapists who had been working on utilizing the Geek Culture as a way to help those less fortunate to better their lives.  This was Geek Heaven. As a man involved with many different facets of geek culture myself, it was comforting to see that NYCC had included all of the right ingredients for a tasty stew, including a careful and masterful blend of comics, comic book artists, writers, video games, toys, educators, musicians, cosplayers, custom weapons of various notoriety, a large number of people in the film and media industries, and, oh yeah, hundreds of journalists and press outlets—all things I love and am involved with in 12 Houses Inc.

IMG_0260Jacques was on a grand adventure that seemed evocative of a hero’s journey.  I was alive and full of wonder and amazement.

Convention goers snapped pictures and stopped every two steps to get a peek at newly released and soon-to-be released indie titles, toys, and technology, all while being unable to “Not” seize every photo-op they could with Hollywood and internet celebrities alike.  At the rate the crowds were moving, walking had been reduced to a shuffle but I didn’t mind; I had Batman on my left and Robin on my right, a stunningly beautiful Wonder Woman ahead.  Random dance battles broke out between super-heroes, one group vs. another, Spider-Man vs. Deadpool, Attack on Titan and Disney characters alike took turns in the cleared center to show off their awesome yet deadly dance moves, ultimately slaying their opponents with Oppen Gangnam style.  IVY DOOMKITTYThere were a number of panels where the creators and producers of almost any Geek related show you could imagine met their fan base and following.  From Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Teen Wolf, lines stretched all the way into the food court.  In my opinion, and from what I personally witnessed, I think the largest crowds I came across were clamoring for a peek at Ivy Doom Kitty and Stan Lee himself.  Stan Lee

Other noteworthy celebrities were also in attendance but they were placed in booths on different floors with lines that stretched narrowly would be the length of a football field, but my time was limited.  I couldn’t wait two hours on-line to see Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny, Hulk Hogan, Felicia Day, and Joel Gray.  As a child of the 80’s, I was super impressed to shake Sgt. Slaughters hand and had the opportunity to let him know that aside from wrestling, I had always wanted to be Red Dog from Sgt. Slaughters Marauders.

IMG_0307It took all four days for me to personally visit and see every part of the Javitz Center’s various floors and sections and with what seemed to me to be tens of thousands convention-goers, I would have gotten lost had I not had an event map and truth be told, I became lost more times than I can count by memory, but I was the happiest lost person you have ever seen.  I tried to stay focused on the production but it’s hard to tell a geek to abstain while he is in the midst of all his preferred vices of choice.  Elation.IMG_0264
I’m consciously trying to “NOT” write a book on my weekend as I feel the urge to go on and on about the experience and all of its multi-faceted aspects, but I’ll exercise restraint and give you a small taste of how great the event was. Aside from the photos in this article, GIGA: Geek magazine and 12th House Media will be sharing all images, and video content gathered by us on this grand voyage and surreal adventure.

Stay tuned all of my GIGA Geeks!
