Mewtwo is Coming to Super Smash Bros, NO JOKE

Fans have been waiting for this moment since Mewtwo was cut from Brawl. In fact, many believed Greninja was the psychic Pokémon making a return. Time and time again, Nintendo would tease something about Smash, with fans shouting for Mewtwo, only to get denied each time. The amount of memes and videos for Mewtwo is staggering and hilarious.

Needless to say, I was kind of skeptical about the Wii-U version. I already have the 3DS game, why would I need the other? Obviously, the amount of stages are to be higher and they will also be more detailed and larger, which was revealed practically at conception. Other than that, though, I didn’t expect much to be different.

Nintendo has been doing amazing things with its live release videos. For Smash on Wii-U, Nintendo pulled all the stops. About fifty facts are given, but one in particular trumps them all.

My only question for Nintendo is will Mewtwo ever be available for those who own only one version? I may not have a Wii-U by then, so I’d love the option of paying for one of my favorite characters.

Giga At Tsubasacon 2014: Eien Strife

There are two things that I look forward to in October: my birthday and Tsubasacon. Lucky for me those two things happen on the same weekend. It’s probably the only anime convention in West Virginia and it is becoming one of my favorites. Last year I got to hang with David Vincent, the voice of Grimjow from Bleach. He even said some things as his characters for Forever Classic. That was a great weekend.

This time around, I lacked a video camera. So, instead of my usual Youtube coverage, I wanted to at least give you a peek at what you missed this year.

Out of spontaneous curiosity, I stuck around the main event room for a concert that I had no idea about. Eien Strife was set to perform, headlining the music for the weekend. I saw the band earlier that day, cosplaying original characters. I didn’t think much of it, but I did like the neon colored strings on their instruments. When I stepped into that concert, though, I was blown away.

[youtube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zOHRJO2kMqY&w=640&h=360]

Eien Strife is a group of four adventurers who hail from the land of Terina. The heroes come from different walks of life, but they work together to bring down monsters, explore new places, and gain experience. Each concert is one of their side quests. This concert had the heroes pursue a Sacred Ring of Fire to keep the evil Phoenix from breaking its seal and destroying the forests.

Their music reminds me a lot of Paramore, if they sang songs written for Dragonforce with a little Rise Against mixed in. It’s fast paced with complicated notes and a driving rhythm. On stage, they sometimes perform a Team Attack, usually between the bassist and guitarist. For one song, they stood side by side, guitars crossed and made each other’s chords while the other played. Their second attack formed a tower of power as the bassist sat on the guitarist’s shoulders. These were extremely cool to watch and the band seemed to be having a blast.

Speaking of fun, Eien Strife also does special segments in between songs. A video was projected onto a screen that the band members would duck behind. Each act was a sprite animation, complete with guest appearances by Nathan Explosion and Megaman. While I couldn’t see all of the action, I found these breaks to be hilarious. Eien Strife also boasted that each side quest was tailored to the event.

I also hope that they eventually record their cover of Still Alive, one of gaming’s most famous songs. Their version is amazing.

I went in not knowing who these cosplayers were, but I left wanting their music. I’m pretty sure I was one of the first to buy a sweet wooden thumb drive loaded with their songs. Never have I seen a band that has as much fun or energy as Eien Strife. 1981969_685480128160648_6853774634298305467_n The band also created a few panels. Being me, I went to the Retro Video Game Challenge. It was here that I got to talk to the band personally. They’re all great people to be around; however, they’re also evil because they made me play Ninja Gaiden 3 on the NES with three people on one controller. We made it to the boss at least.

Final Fantasy XV: It’s been a long time coming…

Information on the newest Final Fantasy game has been sparse at best. As a long time fan, I drool over anything Square Enix puts out, but for the past five years or so I haven’t had the same hype I used to have. My first PlayStation game was Final Fantasy VII, what many consider to be a masterpiece. However, my favorite in the series is Final Fantasy IX.

Ever since its announcement as Versus XIII, I have been on pins and needles. I agree completely with Square Enix’s decision to change the title, but honestly I am starting to wonder if I’ll ever get to play this game and will be any good.

This trailer puts some of those fears to rest. It shows beautiful gameplay, tons of charm, and a broad scope. This could be the best Final Fantasy game ever made. I only hope that when it comes out it will be worth the wait. Needless to say I’ll have plenty of things to say about it when it finally releases.

Mega-Evolution is NOT a Fad

Mega-Evolution was thought to be an exclusive mechanic of Pokemon X and Y. Yet, as Nintendo continues to show, haters of Mega-Evolution will have to deal with it, because it’s not going anywhere soon. For those who ignored the newest Pokemon games, Mega-Evolution is a power granted to specific species of Pokemon that pushes their abilities into new levels. To do this, a trainer must have that Pokemon’s Mega Stone. The form lasts for only that battle, but during this time a Pokemon’s strengths, abilities, and even type can be altered. Some Pokemon, such as Charizard and Mewtwo have two mega forms, each with unique attributes.

This mechanic changed the way Pokemon battles were played. A strategic Mega Evolution could change the fate of a match. I frequent a popular browser game called Pokemon Showdown, which focuses solely on competitive Pokemon battles and creates tiers to create a balanced game—it’s basically Fight Club with adorable creatures. When the X and Y mechanics were implemented into the system, it changed everything.

Players began to fear specific Pokemon due to the mere chance that they would Mega Evolve. Last I played, Mega Gengar is still banned and Mega Kangaskahn is invincible. Some trainers hissed at the use of a Mega, while others praised the return of fan favorites in need of a competitive overhaul.

Personally, I love Mega-Evolution. It brought new life into my favorite Pokemon, Charizard. While I loved nothing more than blasting away enemies with a STAB dragon attack, I always thought all this power was temporary. My fears were eradicated with three new games set to be released.

Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby

Using Megas in this game came as no surprise. Remaking the first GBA Pokemon games in the X and Y engine needed to support the mechanic as players would undoubtedly want to trade between the two 3DS games. However, the sheer amount of Megas is rather staggering. Already there have been thirteen confirmed Mega-Evolutions plus an additional two (Latios and Latias) that are assumed as hackers have found the items and models in X and Y. Will all these Megas saturate the game? Will trainers think less of Pokemon that cannot Mega-Evolve? In fact, that would make an excellent plot line for a movie or an episode of the anime if it hasn’t happened already.

Honestly, out all the Megas that have been announced, I’m most excited for Mega Marshtomp. Let’s be honest, there have been few internet phrases that reached the popularity of “I herd u like Mudkips.” That, and Mudkip is the first starter I picked on the original Ruby Version. I also have my fingers crossed for a Mega Flygon, but so far all I’ve gotten is a well-done Rick Roll.

Aside from Mega-Evolution, Primal-Evolution has also been added to Groudon and Kyogre. These forms change those Pokemon into their original selves during the creation of Hoenn. These forms are massive and will prove to be overly powerful. Every time I see them though, I always think, “Can’t wait to see Primal Rayquaza!”

Super Smash Bros. 4

The gaming world has known about this for a while. Both Charizard and Lucario will be able to use their Mega forms in Nintendo’s newest brawler. So far,  only Charizard X has been seen. While the X form is obviously more popular, it sort of leaves Charizard Y to cry in the corner. Melee favorite Mewtwo has yet to make an appearance, but considering it has two forms as well, I’m going to assume that he (or she depending on what movie you watched) will be available in DLC. Whether Mega-Evolution will be available outside of a Final Smash ability is yet to be known. I’d like to see them as alternate costumes at the least, but keeping them as a killing blow can add to the fear of seeing them evolve.

I guess we’ll have to wait until Super Smash Bros. comes out for 3DS on October 3.

Pokken Tournament

A while back there was a screen shot of Blaziken that many fans thought to be about a new Pokemon game. Others thought that Blaziken may be coming to Smash; however, few could’ve guessed that Namco was teaming up with Nintendo to create a Tekken game with Pokemon characters. It is the most astounding bit of news I’ve heard since Hyrule Warriors was announced. Not only is the idea absurd and honestly stupid on paper, but by watching the trailer I was floored. Pokken Tournament is looking to be an awesome Wii-U port of what will obviously eat the yen of Japanese arcade players. Hopefully, Pokken will come to the 3DS as well.

So far details have been scarce, but Lucario, Machamp, and Blaziken have been confirmed characters. What’s interesting is that Lucario is seen using his Mega-Evolution, which may be used in a similar fashion to Kazuya’s Devil form in Tekken. This leaves me to wonder what other Megas will appear in the final game, if any at all. I hope that a new Mega is shown as a boss on Pokken first and later comes to the handheld games.

Either way, being that I’m both a fan of fighting games and Pokemon, I am conducting the hype train for all things Pokemon. Choo! Choo!

Megas Forever!

When Mega-Evolution first arrived I was a skeptic, although through X and Y, I came to love them for what they are. Mega-Evolution adds new things to Pokemon and frankly the series has been so formulaic that it definitely needed the change. Honestly, I’m not too keen on Megas popping up everywhere, but for the most part I enjoy the new designs and power of these forms. I can’t wait to awaken the dragon as Charizard or turn up the heat with Lucario in a more button responsive game.

Thinking Mega-Evolution to be a fleeting thing is harder to do when considering the acceptance of the fans. Artists are creating their favorite Pokemon as Megas, many looking to be professional and creative. Modders have even put Megas into other games, like Minecraft and Super Smash Bros. Brawl. Many gamers were hesitant like me, but most have grown to love these powerhouses. Gamers can’t ignore that something awesome and new has happened to the series.

Finally, Pokemon as a franchise is trying new things and reaching into places it previously wasn’t. Pikachu is a worldly recognizable character to the point that people are forgetting about Mickey Mouse. Whether its toys, games, cards, or simply a bunch of Pokemon at a soccer game, Pokemon bring all sorts of people together for one thing: fun.

Of course, this also means the world is okay with the forced enslavement and gladiatorial engagement of various creatures, but most overlook that.

GIGA Adventures: New York Comic Con 2013

GIGA ME Staff PicCrash Pad: Geek Memoirs
By: Jacques A. Montemoiño

Far beyond the level of excitement to be expected from such a thrilling event as the New York Comic Convention, is the challenge of trying to accurately express how exhilarating my time there was in “words” but I will do my best.

During my journalism phase, I’ve had the privilege of covering a few local conventions yet I had never been to a New York Comic Con or any comic book convention of this immensity and so I was anxious, nervous, and hopeful all at once.   Even though I am a native New Yorker, I had not been there in many years and the idea that this monolithic convention that was happening in a place I once called home only added to the buzz and anticipation.

I flew out of Atlanta Ga. USA up to LaGuardia airport in New York, NY early arriving midday and was greeted by Ms. Jenkins a company rep holding a sign with my name.  After looking over my itinerary, I settled into my NY branch office and promptly I ventured out to the 2013 New York Comic Convention via the A train; the smell of subway and the all too familiar rocking and rumblings of the train I once road as a young man, filled me with warm memories reminiscent of my youth.  The murmur of the hundreds coupled with the gentle sway almost carried me off in to the sleep realms, yet I fought the urge to get comfortable, lean back, and nod off.   As the downtown bound train got closer and closer to 34th street, I began seeing more and more travelers dressed in very familiar outfits and costumes indicative of one of the geek cultures most prevalent pass-times: cosplay.  I knew I was going in the right direction once Pikachu sat next me.
Off of the public transit, maneuvering through thick crowds, up the stairs and on to the busy sidewalks, I was faced with the Empire State Building and the breezy Manhattan streets.  Only a handful of blocks away from the Jacob Javitz Center, where the convention was being held, the walking slowed to a snail’s pace as hundreds tried to make their way down the narrow sidewalk which was apparently under construction and had partially extended into the streets, only to be sectioned off by a temporary barrier that saved me from sharing my passage with cars.  Four blocks away, then three blocks away, and then finally, two blocks away I hit “pay dirt”.  Off in the distance, I saw the top of the convention center when I looked ahead and then I was completely surrounded by hundreds of Comic Con enthusiasts and cosplayers at ground level of the Center.  IMG_0237The smell of New York franks, Shish kebabs, and Halal food filled my nostrils.  “I should eat before I go in” I reckoned and proceeded to order one of each.

I turned the final corner and beheld the magnificence that summons Geeks from all over to this one location and they came out in mass.

I entered the building, and even at 6 feet 6 inches, I felt miniscule and easily lost in the enormity of the environment aNYCC2013 Resized 6nd the crowds of thousands upon thousands.  Everywhere I looked, there were my favorite super heroes posing for pictures and some even adorable enough to stop me in my tracks, as if I were a young boy who was brand new to this Geek World.

The main show floor was packed with hundreds of exhibitors representing some of the most iconic companies that are cornerstones of our unique sub-culture. Bandai, Nintendo, Warner Brothers, Dark Horse Comics, Intel, as well as a slew of hundreds of independent companies—all privileged to share the floor with such industry giants.  With the crowds almost at a standstill, I tried to get as many images as my Canon 70D could muster. IMG_0206Me, as an extroverted person, engaged with a solid 61% of the exhibitionists I came across and, in one weekend, I gathered cards from representatives from many of the most impressive businesses in attendance including some of the development staff for the new Batman Arkham Origins.  http://www.hdwallpapers.in/walls/batman_arkham_origins_video_game-wide.jpg
I even met two gentlemen from Geek Therapy that were educators and therapists who had been working on utilizing the Geek Culture as a way to help those less fortunate to better their lives.  This was Geek Heaven. As a man involved with many different facets of geek culture myself, it was comforting to see that NYCC had included all of the right ingredients for a tasty stew, including a careful and masterful blend of comics, comic book artists, writers, video games, toys, educators, musicians, cosplayers, custom weapons of various notoriety, a large number of people in the film and media industries, and, oh yeah, hundreds of journalists and press outlets—all things I love and am involved with in 12 Houses Inc.

IMG_0260Jacques was on a grand adventure that seemed evocative of a hero’s journey.  I was alive and full of wonder and amazement.

Convention goers snapped pictures and stopped every two steps to get a peek at newly released and soon-to-be released indie titles, toys, and technology, all while being unable to “Not” seize every photo-op they could with Hollywood and internet celebrities alike.  At the rate the crowds were moving, walking had been reduced to a shuffle but I didn’t mind; I had Batman on my left and Robin on my right, a stunningly beautiful Wonder Woman ahead.  Random dance battles broke out between super-heroes, one group vs. another, Spider-Man vs. Deadpool, Attack on Titan and Disney characters alike took turns in the cleared center to show off their awesome yet deadly dance moves, ultimately slaying their opponents with Oppen Gangnam style.  IVY DOOMKITTYThere were a number of panels where the creators and producers of almost any Geek related show you could imagine met their fan base and following.  From Buffy the Vampire Slayer to Teen Wolf, lines stretched all the way into the food court.  In my opinion, and from what I personally witnessed, I think the largest crowds I came across were clamoring for a peek at Ivy Doom Kitty and Stan Lee himself.  Stan Lee

Other noteworthy celebrities were also in attendance but they were placed in booths on different floors with lines that stretched narrowly would be the length of a football field, but my time was limited.  I couldn’t wait two hours on-line to see Gillian Anderson, David Duchovny, Hulk Hogan, Felicia Day, and Joel Gray.  As a child of the 80’s, I was super impressed to shake Sgt. Slaughters hand and had the opportunity to let him know that aside from wrestling, I had always wanted to be Red Dog from Sgt. Slaughters Marauders.

IMG_0307It took all four days for me to personally visit and see every part of the Javitz Center’s various floors and sections and with what seemed to me to be tens of thousands convention-goers, I would have gotten lost had I not had an event map and truth be told, I became lost more times than I can count by memory, but I was the happiest lost person you have ever seen.  I tried to stay focused on the production but it’s hard to tell a geek to abstain while he is in the midst of all his preferred vices of choice.  Elation.IMG_0264
I’m consciously trying to “NOT” write a book on my weekend as I feel the urge to go on and on about the experience and all of its multi-faceted aspects, but I’ll exercise restraint and give you a small taste of how great the event was. Aside from the photos in this article, GIGA: Geek magazine and 12th House Media will be sharing all images, and video content gathered by us on this grand voyage and surreal adventure.

Stay tuned all of my GIGA Geeks!
