So here we are.  Crisp cool air, with the smell of fall in the air, as well as football.  It’s been a long time since we have been privileged to see a battle on  the gridiron, but wait “never more”!  We have FINALLY reach the season, and what a thriller the NFL has been so kind to bless us with.  The Rematch between the Ravens and the Broncos from last year’s playoffs.

The 2012 Baltimore Ravens lost 4 of their last 5 regular season games, made the playoffs with a 10-6 record,  and defeated the Indianapolis Colts in the first round.  A game that no one had thought the Ravens would win.  Then they went on to face the Denver Broncos in round 2.  Now everyone thought for sure this was to be the Ravens demise, as the heavily favored Peyton Manning and Bronco’s hosted the Ravens.  This is a game that could not be settled in 4 quarters, or over time, but took a second over time (first time in 9 years) for the Ravens to pull out the victory over the Broncos, who were 13-3 in the regular season and won 10 out of 10 coming into the playoffs.

Joe Flacco threw 331 yards, 3 TD’s, and zero interceptions, including the last minute pass in regulation to Jacoby Jones on blown coverage by Rahim Moore to tie it up and send it to OT, and Ray Rice piled up 131 yards on 30 carries and 1 TD.  Peyton Manning Matched the 3 TD’s of Flacco, but along with 2 interceptions, including 1 late in the first OT.

The Ravens took that momentum and confidence on to New England, and won that close game to face the Niners in the Superbowl, and win their 2nd franchise Championship.

That was then.  This is now.  Ravens had a HUGE turnaround in personnel, losing greats such as Ray Lewis, Anquan Boldin,  and Ed Reed.  While the Broncos upgraded with the addition of Wes Welker, giving what I feel will be the edge for the Broncos in the season opener, with the Broncos victorious,  31 to 13.

NFL News and Predictions

“It’s not about talent once you get to the NFL because everyone’s got it. It’s about being willing to go that extra mile to be the best and that’s something that I’ve always done.” -Robert Griffin III. That pretty much sums up the preseason. This is where the guys who are talented, get weeded out from the guys that have talent AND the drive to be the best at helping their football team win games. And with preseason halfway over, that means only one thing for the fans. FOOTBALL IS COMING! This has been a very interesting off season, with a number of coaching changes, free agency, injuries, and of course arrests and suspensions. Here is the major news up until now:

The Baltimore Ravens traded away Anquan Boldin to the Super Bowl losing Niners, released Bernard Pollard, Ray Lewis retired, Ed Reed was not resigned, and relocated to Houston to join the Texans, but gain Elvis Dumervil.

Brian Urlacher retired, James Harrison, leaves Pittsburgh and joins the Bengals.

Mike Wallace joined the Dolphins, who broke the bank in free agency by also adding Dannell Ellerbe, Chris Clemons, Brent Grimes and more.

The Packers work out a HUGE deal to lock up Aaron Rodgers long term, but lose Greg Jennings to the Rival Vikings.

The Arizona Cardinals hire former Steelers and Colts offensive coordinator Bruce Arians.

The Patriots lose Wes Welker to free agency, and Aaron Hernandez to the State of Massachusetts as he was arrested without bail in a murder investigation, but add Danny Amendola, who is day to day with an unspecified injury, and Adrian Wilson. They also add Tim Tebow, whom the NY Jets released after drafting College hype Geno Smith, who is nursing a ankle on the green side of New York. Meanwhile, the blue side of New York has worked out a long term deal with Victor Cruz, who is currently in a walking boot hoping to make it back week 1.

Osi Umenyiora Joins the Falcons, as well as Stephen Jackson.

The Philadelphia Eagles find a new head coach in Chip Kelly, after they part ways with Andy Reid, who found a job quickly in Kansas City, and now has Alex Smith as his quarterback to mold.

The Bronco’s gain Wes Welker on offense, but lose Elvis Dumervil, and Von Miller was handed a 6 game suspension for violating the league’s substance abuse policy, for street drugs not performance enhancing drugs.

All of that being said, I feel that the Bronco’s will be fine in the AFC West and take that division. I expect the Dolphins to battle the Patriots for the AFC East, both making the playoffs. The Steelers and the Bengals battle for the AFC North, both making the playoffs as well, and the Houston Texans taking the AFC South, making up the 6 AFC playoff teams.

I don’t see the Cowboys making it in that tough NFC East, but I see the Redskins continuing their success. The Niners take the NFC West slightly over the Seahawks, who also make the playoffs. The Packers take the NFC North and the Falcons take the NFC South, with Saints as a wild card to form the NFC playoff teams.

SGN – NFL – Back To Work

         training camp 2013

It has been nearly six months since the last real NFL action on the field, and has been your typical off season.  Scouting, rookie combine, tryouts, the draft, free agency, retirement, rule changes, and, of course, your typical handful of arrests/citations.  I speak for all of us football geeks when I say “thank god THAT’s all over” as our favorite teams, players and coaches report back to work.  All 32 teams are scheduled to begin Training Camp various days throughout the week.  Here is a quick recap of major news this offseason:

Shortly after winning the Super Bowl, the Baltimore Ravens traded away Anquan Boldin to the Super Bowl losing Niners, released Bernard Pollard, Ray Lewis retired, Ed Reed was not resigned, and relocated to Houston to join the Texans.  Paul Kruger left for the Browns, Dannell Ellerbe signed with Miami, and Joe Flacco was handed a FAT contract, and they added a pass rusher in Elvis Dumerville.  And most recently, Jacoby Jones shows up to training camp without being able to pass the physical.  They did a great job in the draft, but those are some huge holes to fill.

Brian Urlacher also retired, as the aging veteran could not get a deal worked out with Chicago, and same can be said for James Harrison, as he leaves Pittsburgh and joins the Bengals.  Mike Wallace joined the Dolphins, who broke the bank in free agency by also adding Dannell Ellerbe, Chris Clemons, Phillip Wheeler, Brent Grimes and Dustin Keller.  The Packers work out a HUGE deal to lock up Aaron Rodgers long term, but lose Greg Jennings to the Rival Vikings, who also had a good looking draft.

The Arizona Cardinals attempt to upgrade by  hiring head coach Bruce Arians, another former member of the Steelers coaching staff, resign Rashad Johnson, and add Rashard Mendenhall, Drew Stanton, Yeremiah Bell, Jerraud Powers, Carson Palmer and Josh Cribbs.

The Patriots lose Wes Welker to free agency, and Aaron Hernandez to the State of Massachusetts, as he was arrested without bail in a murder investigation, but add Danny Amendola and Adrian Wilson.  They also add Tim Tebow, whom the NY Jets released after drafting College hype Geno Smith, and signing David Garrard, only to add more to the quarterback controversy on the green side of New York.  Meanwhile, the blue side of New York has worked out terms with Victor Cruz, after losing Osi Umenyiora to the Falcons, who have also signed Stephen Jackson, and Tony Gonzalez for another year.

Along with the Arizona Cardinals, the Eagles find a new head coach, Chip Kelly, after they part ways with Andy Reid, who found a job quickly in Kansas City, and now has Alex Smith as his quarterback to mold.  Doug Maronne finds a head coaching job in Buffalo, The Bears fire Smith and hire Marc Trestman, Cleveland hires Rob Chudzinski, San Deigo MikeMccoy, and Jacksonville Gus Bradley.                                       hofgame2013preseasong2013

With the start of training camp, and pre-season right around the corner, the Hall of Fame game between the Dolphins and Cowboys less than 2 weeks away.  We can now start to scout our favorite team’s rookies, and newly acquired free agents, as well as players for our fantasy teams.  Here is goodbye to the dreadfully long 6 month off season, and hello to being just a few steps away from Kickoff weekend with friends, family, good games, good times, and good food.

Brotherly Love

eli_peyton1

Regardless of personal favorites, we can all agree that Christmas dinner at the Manning’s home has to be filled with plenty of trash talk, bragging, and brotherly love.  With 3 rings between the 2 of them, and a father that played behind perhaps one of the worst offensive lines in NFL history for 10 years, there has to be plenty of football conversation going on behind the scenes.

Although Archie Manning had 9 losing seasons in his 10 year career as quarterback with the Saints, he was still a very respected player amongst his peers.  He also raised 2 world champion quarterbacks, in Eli and Peyton.  This has left a question pre-destined to be asked once the two of them joined the NFL: Which brother is better?

Ex New York Giant Tiki Barber, had always questioned the leadership of Eli Manning, and since Peyton joined the NFL first, he set the “standard” Eli would have to live up to.  All through his college career as an Ole Miss Rebel, scouts and professional writers always had this to say about Eli: “He’s good, but he is no Peyton Manning”.  Tiki agreed with this statement, originally, but has a change of tune about it now.  After watching Eli Manning’s successful playoff runs, and a game ending, need to score drive in super bowl XLII against the Patriots, and then defeating the patriots again in XLVI, outshining Tom Brady both times by winning the MVP awards, how could you not agree that you cannot spell the word Elite, without Eli.

images   Super Bowl XLII

Peyton Manning has to be one of, if not the best of all time at reading the defense pre-snap, calling audible’s and hot routes at the line of scrimmage, as well as changing the protection, to protect himself from the blitz.  However, once it comes time for the post season, Peyton seems to get rattled and lose the best of his qualities.  Peyton has a losing post season record at 9-11, with 8 “one and done” playoff appearances, and only 1 super bowl ring to show off.  Not the outcome you would expect from a 4 time league MVP, a 2 time best NFL player ESPY award winner, and a 12 time Pro Bowl starting QB.

So, in a professional game, what means the most? Individual stats? Or championships?  These questions can be debated until the end of time, but what it comes down to is “What is your job?”  Your job as an NFL quarterback is to win games, and win championships.  That being said, I would have to agree with Tiki on this one.  When it comes down to “win or go home” and clutch plays in the big game to win the championship, Eli has outshined his older brother Peyton by a long shot.  Only time will tell if Peyton can win 2 more championships, and outshine his brother in the end.  He is certainly in a very good spot to accomplish this with the Denver Broncos, but we will see.
