Volunteer Sues MLB – For Not Getting Paid?

A man by the name of John Chen is suing Major League Baseball for unpaid wages. He is also seeking a class action status be placed on the suit to include over 2,000 other volunteers that he worked with during the All-Star Game festivities.

Wait, volunteers get paid? Apparently Mr. Chen ardently believes so. Enough so that he is willing to publicly fight, tooth and nail, to prove he’s right.

Chen worked 14 hours over the course of 4 days and if he were to be paid minimum wage he would have made a meager $101.50. It seems Bud Selig wouldn’t risk looking foolish over such a small amount of money; especially when the annual event brought $191.5 million in revenue to the city that never sleeps.

The question that truly remains and should be answered as litigation progresses is, were all of these people truly volunteers or were they hired to be paid workers?
