Final Fantasy Explorers – Inspired, but Lacking

Before cutting into the newest spin-off game of the Final Fantasy franchise, let’s take a look at its obvious inspiration, Monster Hunter.

Capcom’s Monster Hunter is about hunting monsters (surprise, surprise) with different weapon types and using pieces of those monsters to make better equipment to in turn kill bigger monsters.

TANK3_WiiU TitleSheet

The games are usually set in closed areas, connected together to make themed maps. Its biggest appeals are its brutal difficulty, precise controls with specific functions and monsters with complex animations and behaviors. It’s insanely popular in Japan and has picked up quite a fan base worldwide with its latest titles.

Final Fantasy Explorers takes Monster Hunter formula and adds in the iconic themes and creatures of Final Fantasy. Even though it’s clearly riding on that sort of copycat design, it’s a solid idea, in theory.

In execution, Final Fantasy Explorers is a bland, forgettable experience.

Explorers sets up a fairly interesting premise: Eidolons, powerful beings who usually appear as summons in other games, are running rampant; it’s up to the Explorers to take care of them. To do this, Explorers adopt a class, assign abilities and craft gear. Each class has specific strengths and weaknesses, such as the Black Mage being able to lay out tons of damage with magic, while the Knight can soak up damage and keeping aggression away from other players. The Job System in Explorers is just as fun as it has been in previous Final Fantasy games.

Each job’s abilities are attained through beating missions, adding plenty of skills to outfit a player. This ability system is one of the few features keeping this entry afloat. Learning rotations of spells, as well as knowing which abilities are effective for each situation is interesting, especially in multiplayer.

The controls, while clunky at times, allow players to have eight abilities equipped at once, cycling through them with the shoulder buttons. The targeting system can get confusing at times, but usually does okay with staying focused on the target.

One of the greatest features of Monster Hunter is its crushing difficulty, making team work absolutely necessary. Explorers suffers from no difficulty at all. I found myself running through the first eight Eidolons in my first session. I even tried switching classes and not seeking out materials for better equipment, but succeeded even when I knew little about the class. It doesn’t help that dying has no harsh repercussions. One can either self revive with a Phoenix Pinion item, or just lose five minutes on the mission’s timer.

Throwing everything you have at a boss and dying just to replenish stamina is a game-breaking strategy. Most bosses will fall to this without any troubles. Don’t worry, most missions are set with fifty minute timers. That’s about nine or ten lives per mission.

Visually, Final Fantasy Explorers has some solid ideas behind it. The Eidolon monsters are wicked, often using unique designs to the established molds of the iconic monsters. Classic Final Fantasy monsters also look pretty cool, but overall the game lacks variety in creatures. The environment is also lacking with no discerning features to make it stand out. It’s made up of bland fields that are far too open, dotted with lame enemies that die in a single hit. Even giving the player monster buddies to recruit in the single player is worthless, as they get in the way of the camera and usually don’t get to see any action anyways.

Even multiplayer can’t save this one. Sharing terrible experiences with friends can be memorable, like watching awful movies for the laughs. Yet, being in a group adds nothing to Explorers. It lacks challenge, good design and variety, all things that make is inspiration, Monster Hunter, great.

To really show Explorers lacks polish, players can wear outfits and wield weapons of classic Final Fantasy characters. Swing Cloud’s Buster Sword, wear Yuna’s short shorts, spend hours grinding for those parts in a sparse field, questioning your existence. I’m surprised this feature wasn’t locked behind a pay wall.

It’s like Square Enix noticed its quickly emptying wallets, saw the popularity of Monster Hunter,  and then looked to the ridiculously expensive Final Fantasy XV and thought, “Monster Hunter is selling well, lets make that, but with Chocobos and Bahamut. Brilliant!”

Final Fantasy Explorers continues the trend of forgettable games and lost opportunity. This game could’ve been a solid multiplayer experience, but just lacks polish. After enduring this, Type-0 and XIII, Final Fantasy XV better be the best game I’ve ever played.

Until then, I’ll keep going through Final Fantasy IX on my Vita. Wake me up when XV comes out, Giga Bytes.

Derbalan Shuffle: A Unique RPG Card Game on Kickstarter

I recently had a chance to interview Cameron Miller, founder of the gaming company PuppyCat Productions, about his first ever game, Derbalan Shuffle, which he’s funding now on Kickstarter. This is a card-based RPG that in many ways is the antithesis of Dungeons & Dragons.

“The original inspiration for Derbalan Shuffle was Munchkin,” he says. “I picked it up, played it, and wondered what it could be like if it was an actual RPG instead of a parody of an RPG, and so I made it. It went through a series of permutations until I found one that I knew I had to get on the market, and that version is now called Derbalan Shuffle: The Shuffle Begins.”

Miller, a longtime gamer himself, believes a game like this is needed because many people find the copious rules in many RPGs to be intimidating. “Ever try to pitch roleplaying to a friend who hasn’t tried it before?” he asks. “‘Hey, we’re going to play this cool game. You have to try it. We’re going to spend a few hours setting up the game, and then we start playing next week, and in two to three short months, you’ll level up to having the abilities you want, and then it’ll be awesome.’ This is not that game. Derbalan Shuffle is fun from the get-go. Every roleplaying crowd I’ve brought it to has loved it.”

What makes the game unique, he says, is the freedom it grants to everyone involved. “This is designed to be a goofy, rules-light approach to gaming. Character creation takes two to five minutes. You also set aside a minute here and a minute there to explain the rules as you go along. But it’s designed to be easy to get into, easy to teach people new to roleplaying, and yet with enough depth and strategy to last for a campaign.” He adds, “The goal was to have simple mechanics for the players that still allowed for a lot of creativity and strategy, and also to take a lot of the load of prep work off the GM with monsters and loot all there in cards to be pulled out for strategic use or to be used as random monster and loot tables.”

In a nutshell, how does the game work? Miller explains: “The players pick a class that has cards ranked Ace through 10, and add to it a race that gives them three face cards. Each class has its unique abilities, and instead of digging through the book to find the description of that one feat or spell you want to use, it’s right there in front of you on the card. Same with the loot. For monsters, all their attacks and stats are right there, with a picture, so you don’t need to use a mini-fig, and you can keep track of damage and status effects by what cards have been laid on it.”

As for the components themselves, Miller says, “Everything’s based on a deck of 52 cards. There are 52 monsters divided into 4 types. There are 52 loot cards, again with 4 types. Your own personal deck will feature your choice of 13 cards each ranked 2 through ace. Instead of rolling dice, you flip the top card from a standard deck of playing cards. If you don’t have one with you, you can flip one off the top of the monster or loot decks, since they have the same values. Or, if this skill check is too important to leave to chance, you can play a card from your hand to ensure you get the result you want.”

Being that PuppyCat is a small independent company, the game was tested in the field, so to speak. “I go out and find random groups of people and talk them into trying this game as a one-shot. I’ve also been volunteering for game day at the library, running this as a campaign for months on end. And so far, pretty much everyone’s loved it. Gamers, non-gamers, adults, teens. I even had a 9-year-old love it even though the game wasn’t designed to be playable in that age group.”

How’s that for a ringing endorsement?

Miller also spoke highly of those who volunteered much of their time and talent to help make this game a reality—including my younger brother. “The main help has been Jarod Marchand. His art is perfect for this game, and he agreed to help me for free when I was broke. My wife [Linette] has also been a big help with editing and inspiration. But I have to give a major shout-out to the people who’ve play-tested and told me this was awesome, that I need to get this published, that this game can really make it in a world where few RPGs do. Some of them were so emphatic that this could be successful that they pledged $200 on Kickstarter.”

Speaking of Kickstarter, while the game is complete as is, Miller hopes to continue improving the game using donations. “The Kickstarter determines how soon [our] work will pay off and I can start seeing the game on store shelves. As it starts selling, I’m going to put out expansions. New classes, new races, new monsters, new loot. Each new game will be complete on its own, but will also be compatible with each previous and each new Derbalan Shuffle game.” He was quick to mention the perks contributors will receive. “We’re offering all kinds of things: copies of our game, sheets of stickers, the ability to play-test future games. For those who want to be more involved, we can write you into one of our adventure modules or include a card of your design in every game we ship.”

Gamers can purchase copies through the Kickstarter campaign, but that’s not the only place they can get it, says Miller. “It will be on the Game Crafter sometime in November 2015. I’m hoping to get it backed on Kickstarter or sold to a publisher so I can get the price down and get stores to take it. If the Kickstarter funds, it should be out in time for Christmas. If not, I’m going forward with this project until I can either get the money to publish it myself or find a publisher who sees in it the same potential that my play-testers have. Other than that, the website will have freebies for Derbalan Shuffle. Free adventure modules, free setting information, free tips, and whatever else I can think of.”

If this sounds like a game you’d love, check out its Kickstarter. I just sent in a pledge, and you could, too!

The Many Versions of Final Fantasy IV

Final Fantasy Summon Origins: Leviathan

A strange sight caught Cecil’s eyes as the boat sailed across the waves. There was a swirl forming, just a few yards from the port side, gaining speed and broadening. The ship tipped as it slowly sucked in. Cries of panic surrounded Cecil and his companions. Unable to do anything, Cecil watched as the water engulfed the sky.

Just before the sea swallowed the boat, Cecil saw an immense serpent coiled beneath the surface. “Leviathan!” yelled a crewman.

Summoning is often one of the strongest and most visually appealing forms of magic in the Final Fantasy series. First appearing as a summon in Final Fantasy III in Japan, Americans did not get introduced to Ifrit and pals until Final Fantasy 4 hit the SNES. Since then, these powerful beings have become icons, often being envisioned in many creative ways for each installment.

While there are many summons to elaborate on, there are a few that could use a bit more discussion. For some excellent insight into other summons, check out Gaijin Goomba’s series on Youtube:

Leviathan’s character is a simple design, a massive sea serpent that summons tidal waves to drown enemies. However, his size and immense power is better described in his origins. Sea serpents have been showing up in literature ever since the days of the Nordic folk. Even the Bible references this massive creature said to be immune to all weapons.

“Canst thou draw out leviathan with an hook? or his tongue with a cord which thou lettest down?” – Job 41: 1

Interestingly enough, this same passage mentions befriending the creature or at least making a pact with it. Considering in Final Fantasy X, many summoners create bonds with their Aeons, this could be a potential influence to Leviathan being created as a summon.

“Will he make a covenant with thee? wilt thou take him for a servant for ever?” – Job 41: 4

There was actually a Final Fantasy IV novel in Japan! Wish it would translated one day. . .

The first Leviathan in Final Fantasy III showed a simple design and concept. He’s just a regal serpent with long whiskers that summons weather forces. However, in Final Fantasy IV, he becomes a king of beings called Eidolons. The Eidolons are powerful elemental beings that live in a separate plane of existence. It’s here that Rydia (the summoner of Final Fantasy IV) gains her mastery of summoning, also creating an interesting parental connection with Leviathan and his queen, Asura. Both of these royal beings offer rough battles, but end with the prize of being able to call on them.

It’s also interesting that Leviathan’s human form in Final Fantasy IV is that of an old man. He appears frail and wise, sporting a long beard like many of the other sages in the series. In many mythologies, higher beings often have the power to shape shift. For instance, Zeus regularly transforms into animals such as an eagle or a bull, usually to carry away maidens and sometimes young men for, well,  coitus.

Leviathan’s human form could have connections to Proteus, son of Oceanus of Greek mythology. Proteus could call upon great storms and change his shape, one of which was a snake.

Proteus-Alciato

As far as his design goes, Leviathan does not see much change until Final Fantasy IX. In this game, he is given wing-like fins that give him a more imposing appearance. His color palette also expands to include many shades of purple to accent his blue skin. Also important to note is Leviathan is a female. This makes sense, as summoning is a feminine power used only by Eiko and Garnet. That same motif is carried into Final Fantasy X by Yuna.

Leviathan_FFIX_Art_1

Both MMO Final Fantasy games retain Leviathan’s wings, neither changing the design too drastically. Unfortunately, Leviathan has been absent in true form in later console games. The Sea King lives on in name as an airship and as a plaza.

As of now, its unknown what sort of role summoning will have in Final Fantasy XV. Will the tides rise with the revival of Leviathan? Or will he merely remain a memory? At least, early trailers suggest he (maybe she) will be a massive boss.

FFXV_-_Leviathan

Thus Leviathan remains as a staple for those wanting to add some water to their magic repertoire. His role in the story of the series has been grand and subtle, but one thing is certain, Leviathan is an icon of Final Fantasy.

Indie Alert: Trippy RPG – Y2K

Ackk Studios is working on a 3D, turn-based, Japanese-style RPG: Y2K—that takes me back, I’m old. Players control an unemployed college graduate, Alex. Alex is on a quest to find answers behind the death of a young woman: her life is claimed by an erratically behaving elevator.  During his search through ’90s message boards, Alex learns about a “Death Cab” roaming the city and countryside and the death toll surrounding it.

Enemy encounters are much like any other RPG, except when you kill an enemy it’s gone forever. Most of your grinding will take place in Mind Dungeons, where you will find chest that contain special moves you can’t find outside the dungeon. I’m excited about this game. The story sounds crazy, but I’m intrigued. Ackk Studios promises a story-heavy, “gripping narrative, an expansive world, memorable characters and an emotionally moving score.” I can’t wait.

Ackk Studios is shooting for a late 2015 or early 2016 release on the PS4, PS Vita, PC and Wii U.
