Gamez: The Open-Ear Headphones

AfterShokz, has taken bone conduction technology—originally developed for  military and law enforcement use—and made it available to everyone. Known for its unconventional, open-ear headphone design, AfterShokz has taken this design and applied it to Gamez: wireless, Bluetooth headphones for PC, Mac and mobile gamers. Open-ear headphones do not sit inside the ear like earbuds or sit on top of the ear, instead they rest in front of the ear, “transmitting sound through the cheekbones to the inner ears via mini vibrations, which bypasses the eardrums completely.” This design allows users to enjoy their music or game without losing any awareness of their surroundings. So, if you’re trying to beat the last level while in a crowded living room or you want to listen to your music while hanging out with a group of friends, Gamez are perfect for those types of situations.

What makes Gamez different from AfterShokz’s other products is that they are acoustically specific for gaming. They  are “the only Bluetooth(R) stereo headphones that create an immersive stereo environment without tuning out the world.”

I am a huge fan of earbuds, so when I first heard about AfterShokz I was skeptical. How good will the sound/music be if it’s sitting on the outside of my ear? Will it fit right? Isn’t being able to hear my surroundings the exact opposite of what headphones are supposed to be used for? Surprisingly, I was blown away by theses headphones. Gamez may have shown me a new and more ear-friendly way to get the same experience I have with earbuds.

The fit is odd at first. Not only do the headphones rest outside of the ears, but they also curve around the neck. This structure hinders me from bending my neck backwards without pushing the headphones out of place. However, lying down with them on is not an issue. I can even lie down on my side, which can be super uncomfortable with regular headphones. I did get a slight headache the first time I wore them, but it lasted only a few minutes once I got used to the placement. I’m sure that has something to do with the vibrations from the sound. For people with smaller heads, like myself, included in the package is a rubber, adjustable tension band that you snap into the headset, making the fit a little more snug. Once I was used to wearing them, I kept them on for about three to four hours straight, with no problems. Really comfortable and lightweight headphones.

Sound quality was definitely a major concern. Do I get that in-ear experience earbuds provide? No, but it is definitely close. The sound quality is a lot better than I thought it would be. I can feel the bass—literally, you can feel it on your cheeks—and I can hear every little part of each song, as if I am wearing regular headphones. You would think because it sits outside of your ear the bass wouldn’t be as strong and the volume would have to be jacked up all the way, but that is not the case. I can still enjoy that deep, strong bass in my Dubstep playlist. Playing mobile games is the same experience: clear, high-quality sound. The vibrations do tickle my inner ear sometimes, but it’s not annoying or distracting.

I have a loud family who likes to talk over the already loud TV. I could still sit in the living room with them and comfortably listen to my music while doing some work on the computer. The loud background noise is not distracting at all, and I can still interact with people without missing a beat. AfterShokz is able to balance surrounding noise and the sound from their headphones, allowing users to enjoy both at the same time.

Using the headphones is simple and uncomplicated. The buttons can be accessed easily and pairing is quick. Just slip them on as quick as any other headphones. Exercising is not an issue, either; these things will not budge.

I wouldn’t recommend open-ear headphones for every situation. Because these are open-ear headphones, sound doesn’t travel directly into your ear, which means, any people around you will also be able to hear noise from your headphones. If you plan on going to the library, a quiet coffee shop or have to take a train ride, I’d say take your regular headphones instead—unless you don’t care about bothering others.

I can’t wait to see how far AfterShokz can take this technology. Could their headphones take over the market and become the norm? I hope AfterShokz’s next  task will be to create headphones for console gamers.

Until then, you can purchase a pair of Gamez for $99.95, or peruse AfterShokz for more techy goodies.

Big Bad Bosses – A Music Team Up of Gaming Proportions

Being the savy game journalist that I am, I would be failing all of my readers if I ignored what is created by gamers. Sure, the world of gaming is built on the minimalist approach of Shigeru Miyamoto or the world building of Todd Howard, but everyday, in unique ways, gamers themselves build on the foundation laid by the greats.

Sites like Youtube, Twitch and Facebook spawned the likes of Jirard the Completionist, Pewdiepie and more. These talented gamers often take their love of digital worlds into other areas of expertise like video creation, writing (cough cough) and even game design.

Music has also been a popular outlet of creation for gamers: the pounding raps of Arin Hanson and Dan Avidan in Starbomb to the somber tones of Lindsey Stirling. The amount of excellence in these works is astounding, trumping professional audio productions and even outselling some of the most popular acts of our time.

A new collaboration effort seeks to join these phenomenal music works with an A-list of talented gamers and composers behind the helm. Behold the Big Bad Bosses‘ first album, Power Overwhelming, a gaming tribute pop album with raps and rocking melodies. The parody album gives some of our favorite villains a voice, which  features the skills of Jake Kaufman of Shovel Knight and Double Dragon Neon glory, Jirard Kahlil, Alex Faciane, Satchell Drakes and Nate Sharp.

Gaming culture has evolved drastically from the defiant file sharers of early PC gaming. Now, gamers dominate media, just as authors and film producers did. This movement not only helps gamers branch into professional skills, but also shows just how much video games have become a influential medium as a whole. Games used to be the root cause of evil, as Doom was linked to violent crimes and Grand Theft Auto taking the stand after each release, but there is so much more available.

Video games are a medium worth defending. Gamers like the Big Bad Bosses are leading the movement in a dynamic way.

Toho Teases Its Own Reboot with ‘Godzilla: Resurgence’

Gareth Edwards’ Godzilla proved to be a monstrous hit summer 2014, and now the King of the Monsters will return to his native Japan. Toho, the studio that created Big G, announced last December that it would be making a new unrelated film, which makes this the third reboot for the franchise excluding the American films. It’ll be the 31st Godzilla film and the 29th created by Toho, which hasn’t released one since 2004’s Godzilla: Final Wars.

News on the new film was quiet until last week when Toho released a 30-second video that is the textbook definition of a teaser trailer. Not since Christopher Nolan’s first trailer for The Dark Knight has there been a more mysterious preview for a film.

[youtube https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCOSFZG9-KQ]

The 30-second spot is a found-footage-style shot of a panicked crowd running from something in the distance. It ends with a title card and Godzilla’s trademark roar. That’s it; nothing on the plot or characters. Whether the entire film will be done in a found-footage-style, a la Cloverfield, or if this is just a clip from an otherwise traditional movie remains to be seen. Personally, while found footage would be a new direction for the franchise to experiment with, considering Cloverfield’s attempt at it has gotten mixed responses (though I liked it), that may not be the best option. However, if these filmmakers think they can do it well, by all means try it.

Many fans have criticized it for its overlong jawline and googly eyes, saying it “lacks personality.” In my opinion, it looks like a throwback to the original 1954 design used in the original Gojira, but perhaps a bit more realistic. The real test will be how it looks in motion on camera.

Story has it the special effects will be a combination of CGI and practical effects. It sounds like Toho wants the best of both worlds: taking cues from Edwards’ film while also adhering to its “suitmation” roots. Whether this works or not will probably make or break the film.

Regardless, the movie is in great hands since it has two noteworthy directors. Hideki Anno, who also wrote the script, is the co-creator of the classic anime Neon Genesis Evangelion: a trippy and cerebral giant robot series that deconstructs the “mecha” subgenre. Shinji Higuchi has also worked on anime, but his most recent project is directing the two-part live-action adaptation of the manga/anime Attack on Titan, which told the story of humanity battling cannibalistic giants. Anno has said that this will be “the scariest Godzilla yet,” and given both directors’ track records, it may very well turn out to be true.

Godzilla: Resurgence hits Japanese theatres July 29, 2016. No word yet on an American release.

Go, go Godzilla!

Madam Secretary: Season 2 Episode 7 Recap

Well after missing last week’s recap, I’m back! And I’m excited to have a fun episode to write about. This week’s Madam Secretary had everything I love about this show. It was simple and was more about the characters as opposed to some insane international crisis.

Episode seven centered around the reopening of the Cuban Embassy in D.C. and the American Embassy in Cuba. Bess and her team (excluding Matt) are very excited about this occasion, but Bess really moves into action when a senator is caught in a scandal and resigns from his post. This particular senator was in charge of what gets brought to a vote in Congress, and Bess takes this chance to push for a vote to lift the United States’ Embargo on Cuba. When Matt hears about this new plan, he tells Bess he wants to help but she at first turns him down. She doesn’t want his help if he isn’t sincerely excited about the U.S. mending its relationship with Cuba. She refuses to let him help her write the speech to be given at the American Embassy’s opening, but Matt insists that Bess let him prove his sincere interest. So instead of writing a speech, Matt goes out and meets with two former Marines who were stationed in Cuba at the time the embargo was instated.

Meanwhile, Bess goes to the President and pitches her idea to lift the Cuban embargo. And of course her nemesis Craig doesn’t think it’s worthwhile, but for once Russel actually agrees with Bess. Not much convincing later, and the President has agreed to support the vote. As soon as she gets the President’s okay, Bess and her team begin scrambling to get enough “yes” votes. Russel even steps in a couple of times to help Bess out, but all does not fair well. Just as they get the last vote they need to win, Bess and Russel see one of their senators giving a press conference on the news. He brings a woman on the screen and announces that he’ll only vote to lift the embargo if Cuba returns a fugitive living there accused of murdering this woman’s husband, a Chicago police officer, decades before.

So instead of being able to enjoy her trip to Cuba, Bess now has to find this fugitive (Afeni) and convince the Cuban government to return her to the United States. But before she can even make it to Cuba, Russel jumps into her limo to catch her up on this senator debacle. Henry suggests that perhaps Craig is behind this whole thing since he opposes this vote, and because he’s still mad at Bess about Russia. Russel thinks Henry’s crazy, but agrees to keep an eye on Craig in the meantime.

Upon her arrival, Bess meets with Cuba’s foreign minister and convinces him to take her to Cuba’s First Vice President. At this meeting Bess presents the VP with three Cuban prisoners the U.S. government is willing to trade for Afeni, but the Cuban VP shoots her down. The Cuban foreign minister is disappointed in this outcome, so he takes Bess to meet with Afeni in person. He suggests that since she can’t get the Cuban government to turn her over, perhaps Bess can convince Afeni to turn herself in. Of course this does not happen. Afeni refuses Bess’s offer because she never shot the police officer, and she fears she won’t get a fair trial since she’s an African-American woman. Never one to take no for an answer, Bess does her research and discovers that the FBI purposely hide evidence that proves Afeni never shot the cop. She comes back to Afeni with this news, and also promises to give her as much press coverage as she wants so that the American people will know her story.

And so, with Afeni returned to America, Congress votes to lift the embargo on Cuba. Bess gives a lovely speech at ceremony, and she’s accompanied by the former Marines Matt sought out. Even in the White House, everyone seems thrilled with this historic moment. That is of course except for Craig who Russel sees cozying up to the senator who derailed the vote in the first place. This moment convinces Russel that Craig was behind the whole debacle, and tells Bess the only way they can solve this problem is to “bury” Craig. I really hope they can pull this off. I will not be sad to see Craig go….
