Glitches, Glitches Everywhere: How the Industry Deals With Buggy Games

To err is human. I’m not one of those unreasonable forum ranters who nitpicks every tiny issue in every game. When players in Madden walk through the goal post or when the background of the Skyrim landscape seems to be developing in front of my eyes, I let it rock. I’d like to believe I’m fairly aware of the time, technical skill and dedication necessary to create the wondrous worlds that I love.

However, be it because of unrealistic yearly deadlines or a general lack of attention to detail, there are certain things that are unacceptable at this stage in gaming. Actually, let’s say there’s a frequency of things that are unacceptable at this day and age. Now, it is no secret I am a Bioware fan. From Knights of the Old Republic 1 and 2 to the Mass Effect Trilogy to the recently completed Dragon Age Trilogy, I’m with it all. My issue here is the same bugs and defects that were issues on the original Xbox still plague gamers today. At least back then, you could blame skips and freezes on scratches. I was completely fine with accepting that I couldn’t get to disk 2 on Final Fantasy VIII because I didn’t take care of my game and it froze on the last cut scene (SN: I just borrowed my friend’s disc one. To this day, I think I still have it smh).

Now, even a digital copy of a game isn’t safe from random error crashes, music mysteriously cutting out, characters disappearing and reappearing for no rhyme or reason, I mean the list is almost endless. The killer is, Bioware doesn’t make bad games. Actually, it’s created genre defining work. For the level of its work and for the formula it uses, at the very least, it has to cut down on the frequency of ALL of these issues and at best, eliminate them completely. I mean, I couldn’t even respec my character without the game freezing, but they’re pumping out multiplayer DLC. Priorities people, priorities.

So, what they mean to ever so kindly tell me is, it’s more important to put new content into a damaged (because it’s not quite broken) game instead of fixing what they had to know was wrong before they even released it? With the advent of patching console games, I don’t see how issues like this persist more than a couple months, if that. You know there’s an issue, your forums are overflowing with your fanbase, your CUSTOMERS, asking for you to fix it and instead of pushing back superficial content and correcting your mistake, you plow forward with the gameplan as if nothing is wrong. It’s pretty disheartening to see honestly. Yes, I’m fully aware DLC is planned in advanced and there’s all kinds of self imposed deadlines to get the most out of the market and blah blah blah, but I don’t know anyone who would buy a product for any price and seek additions before making sure the core functions work.

Unfortunately, it will probably never change. If they can put out a subpar product, with little to no real competition, and we buy it anyway, why would they bother putting in the extra time to fix decade-old glitches? There’s an entire economics lesson on how to get it to change, but we all know we’d rather just yell voicelessly in forums.

Nintendo Direct: January 2015

Nintendo Direct videos are becoming one of the highlights of gaming news. The newest video to arrive featured some interesting news from Nintendo.

Nintendo 9
What’s with Link and going into impossible dungeons of water? Prepare to feel true anger again.

Software

Several previously announced games recieved more news during this event. The remake of the N64 classic Majora’s Mask will be making use of the New 3DS’ C Stick, allowing players to rotate the camera a full 360° around Link. While this may not seem substantial, this could completely change the way the game is played.

Another interesting feature comes from the folks behind Code Name STEAM, a strategy game that mixes action with traditional turn based combat. Fire Emblem characters can be unlocked via their Amiibo figures. Ike, Marth, Lucina, and Robin will all be available as playable characters with their own unique weapons and play styles.

Nintendo 4
In a game with assault rifles, aliens, and Abraham Lincoln, Ike actually fits pretty well with a unique approach to combat.

Nintendo also announced that Wii titles will soon be available for download on the Wii U. These games will no longer need to be played in Wii Mode for players to access some amazing titles. In fact, Super Mario Galaxy 2 should be available now, while the Metroid Prime Trilogy and Punch Out!! will be released in the coming months. Many games that were playable with the Wii Classic Controller will also be fully playable with the Wii U Game Pad. If this means Metroid Prime will finally be playable with two analog sticks, minds will be blown.

Nintendo 3
Arguably one of the best Mario games ever made. Now let’s hope it will be available for less than fifty bucks.

As far as new games, only a few were revealed. At the start of the event, a new Fire Emblem game was teased for the 3DS. Following on the heels of Fire Emblem: Awakening’s success, this isn’t a huge surprise. However, I expected the next Fire Emblem to be on Wii-U. Yet, they always seemed to be more popular on handhelds.

Nintendo 11
This dancer was one of the highlights of a gorgeous trailer for the new Fire Emblem. Expect cosplays next week.

A series that’s seen quite a bit of popularity in Japan is coming to the states in May. Puzzle and Dragons Z is a quirky puzzle game in the style of Bejeweled, combined with RPG elements. If that wasn’t enough, Nintendo is also packaging Puzzle and Dragons: Super Mario Edition with it. Both look like fun and addictive puzzle games.

Speaking of puzzle games, Nintendo is apparently keeping tabs on the wildly successful Candy Crush Saga. Pokemon Shuffle is coming to 3DS in February and will feature limited moves, a timed energy system, and collectible Pokemon that effect how the game plays. The game will be free to play.

Nintendo 2
Gamers everywhere will soon be able to shuffle with the master for free, unless you get stuck and can’t take it, then you can pay Nintendo a dollar.

While Nintendo’s main focus for this event was the New 3DS (I’ll get to more on that later) it did announce several new Amiibo Figures. In Spring, Nintendo plans on releasing a Super Mario series of toys to coincide with the release of Mario Party 10. Most of these figures are just different models of those already available (Mario, Luigi, Peach, etc.); however, Toad will be released for the first time and he will have compatibility with last year’s Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker.

Nintendo 7
Expect Ike to sell for way more than intended a month after being snatched up by scalpers. No Toy R’ Us is safe.

Amiibo collectors should also be happy that Nintendo isn’t ignoring desperate pleas and ridiculous purchases of Marth. For some reason, Marth is one of the rarest characters so far, selling way above 13 USD. Nintendo will be shipping more Marth figures soon, hopefully diluting the rarity and the feverish collection.

One of the main reasons for today’s post is the new 3DS. This system boasts more processing power than the rest of the 3DS family, alongside several hardware features that most gamers are already aware of. The console will be releasing February 13 alongside Majora’s Mask 3D.

This system will be compatible with NFC figures, so in theory Skylanders and Disney Infinity could be compatible as well without peripherals. Oddly enough, Nintendo revealed that the New 3DS will not be coming with an AC Adapter. Don’t worry, all previous adapters will work with the new system. Why they chose to do this is an obnoxious mystery.

Other than that, it’s strange that Nintendo is only releasing the XL versions of their new consoles. What bothers me is the Gamecube and Super Famicom models of the new 3DS are more appealing to nostalgic geeks and collectors like myself. Whether these are even coming to the states is a mystery, but it may have to do with their relatively low price point of 153 USD after conversion. Come to think of it the New 3DS LL is only 180 USD in Japan, while the suggested retail is 199.99 USD in the US.

Nintendo 5
But Nintendo, what if I want the cheaper, more nostalgic version?

The final bit of news is of two special editions of the New 3DS, one being the already leaked Monster Hunter 4 version.

The other version is none other than a beautiful, golden Majora’s Mask edition. Presumably these two 3DS systems will have their respective games loaded digitally, but that’s yet to be confirmed.

All in all, Nintendo continues to impress and baffle with their online press events and decisions. I’ve already planned on pre-ordering the Majora’s Mask edition of the New 3DS later today. What did you think of Nintendo Direct this time? Leave a comment below or on any one of our social media pages.

Until next time, stay cool.

Revolver X Katana Episode 2: A Slight Complication

“ I told ya he was a chiseler, and he’s a china man now get ‘em both!” Michael shouted.

“I am Japanese!” Hasame yelled, offended.

The townsfolk came runnin’ towards us at Michael’s command. It was like a stampede as the dozens of feet of the rampagin’ townsfolk slammed on the ground. Nothin’ was stoppin’ ‘em now, so I got straight up outta my chair jumped on the table to get a better view of an escape route (Not before grabbin’ my earnin’s or course), but Hasame just calmly stepped out of his chair and began drawing his sword. I didn’t know what the Jap was thinkin’ but I didn’t give him a chance to show anybody, I grabbed his arm and pulled him up on the table.

“What do you think you are doing?” Hasame asked blankly, as if I was a minor hindrance to whatever plan was runnin’ through his mind.

“savin’ your hide from doin’ somethin’ stupid! Just do what I do and we’ll get outa this mess.” I pointed at a small opening in the crowd between the woman with the eye patch and the doctor where I was plannin’ to jump to the next table through ‘em. Hasame seemed to be two steps ahead because by the time I looked back at him he was already in the air. He landed with same style that he had before, and looked back at me impatiently. I got a runnin’ start and kicked off the table’s edge , unfortunately my time in the air didn’t go as smoothly as his did, and I started comin’ down too early, right in the middle of the lot of ‘em. The woman’s hand reached fer a gun in her coat pocket.

Bang!!!!

Her limp body fell flat backwards on to the doctor behind her, blood trickled down her forehead. Me and Hasame took the opportunity to run straight out the saloon door. I looked around for a place to hide, and I saw the train station. “Here, let’s go in the station, there’s bound to be stuff to hide behind.” My suggestion didn’t seem to sit well with my Asian partner.

“I will not hide, especially since there is no point, I can take on these barbarians. Wait here if you want to be a coward.” He went for his sword again and began walkin’ to the saloon, but I grabbed him by the shoulder.

“Look partner, I’m sure you can handle a pack of drunk, stupid locals. You don’t want to be stirring up that kind of trouble, you’ll wind up with bounty on yer head, and be dead within the month.” Hasame gave me the look of a stubborn ass that finally gave way and went with me to the station. When we got there, I saw what looked like a cargo loadin’ area, on an elevated wood floor, with several piles of wooden barrels and crates. We hid ourselves among the cargo, and it looked like we had lost ‘em. “Damn preacher just had to get me to shoot ‘em, I wasn’t plannin’ fer a darin’ escape today. Well, at least I made a fine dollar offa the Lord’s right hand man before I have to be jumpin’ from the flames of Hell.”

“I hope you jump from flames better than tables.” Hasame laughed at me.

“Look here, I don’t usually have to jump from tables, so excuse me if I’m not hoppin’ like a damn Jackrabbit . I don’t know what the hell happened to my sleeves that they split open like that, I gotta stop buyin’ the cheap clothes.”

“Oh no, it was not your clothes, it was me.” Hasame continued chuckling.

“What the hell do you mean it was you?!” I whispered angrily. I was trying to keep from bein’ noticed by our adorin’ fans, but trying to fight the urge to punch Hasame’s smirkin’ bazoo in.

“I mean I cut your sleeves, I saved you from the dishonor of a life of cheating so tha…” SMACK!! Right then I showed him what I thought of his savin’ me and I punched him square in his tiny, self-righteous nose. His hat flew off and  he flew straight into a barrel pile, knockin’ ‘em over and buryin’ him. While he was under, I managed to put two and two together. Punchin’ a guy who can cut my sleeves from across a table, without me even noticing, may not have been a good showin’ of my brains. Hasame was down for a minute and then started pushin’ the cargo offa him, and I made a sound somewhere between “gulp” and “crap”; somethin’ like “crulp” or “cralp” or maybe even a simple “shit”; either way I was not in an agreeable situation. Not that I couldn’t have taken the Asian, it just wasn’t the time to be shootin’ signals to my “rescuing party”. Hasame got up from the barrels and gave me a look of disappointment.

“These barrels are heavy, you could have killed me, and some of them have a horrible odor.” Hasame patted dust off his clothes and retrieved his hat.

“Judging from the smell, I’d say cow manure, and I wish you had gotten buried in it. I was tryin’ to earn me an honest day’s pay when you so rudely outed me. Now once word spreads, ain’t no one goin’ to play me in five finger fillet, let alone poker.  I don’t know what manners they teach you over in Japan, but over here, when you see a man chiselin’, you shut yer yap and let him work!” Poker was about the only thing that gave me a good time anymore, not that the people I played were ever any good, they weren’t, but their money was good to buy gin and a night at the local bordello. If it was a “good” Christian town like this one, then I just used the money to get drunk and usually ended up takin’ a leak on the front door of the church, not that I’m a blasphemer, the town preacher usually joined me.

“Don’t worry… I’m sorry what was your name?” Hasame asked.

“Jim.”

“Yes, Jim, well don’t worry I’m beginning to think that I may have the wrong man regardless. I wouldn’t want to be traveling the country with a man who punches people he met 5 minutes ago.”

“You got me run outta town!”

“Are you arguing the point? Maybe you do want to join me after all.”

“…. look shut yer damn trap, I told you I ain’t got no interest!” I was startin’ to get to the point where I was lyin’. When Hasame mentioned travelin’ around the country, my ears perked up a bit out of excitement, and I think Hasame was readin’ me.

“Yes, you told me that before, so once we deal with this current problem, we can part. Though of course you made even that more irritating than it needed to be.” Hasame answered in a half smart ass tone.

“What are you talkin’ about.” I asked.

“The old woman, the town’s people aren’t going to be happy about that.”

“What about the old hag?” I knew in the back of my head what he was talkin’ about, a man don’t shoot a woman down and expect to hear the end of it. I knew, but I still wanted to play stupid about it fer as long as I could before a bounty hunter came and broke my head in.

“Drifter! Now you ain’t getting’ nowhere alive, you killed Ashley! Get out here now, so we can all get our shots in on ya!” That gave me my answer, and my time in this town was about up. Me and Hasame crouched as close down as we could behind the barrels, and I began thinkin’ about how to get out of our unfortunate predicament. “If you ain’t comin’ out, we’s just gonna have to look fer ya and then when we find ya, we’s gonna take our time with ya instead!” The yellin’ seemed to be gettin’ closer to the station. I looked around to find a better place to evade the posse and I took notice of the fairly large barrels. I could see a person fittin’ in ‘em.

“We’ll hide in these barrels; no one would think to look in ‘em, too original.” I whispered to Hasame.

“Everyone has thought of that, why don’t I just send up a flag to tell them we are here, at least then I could just deal with them and be done with it.”

“You are givin’ these drunkards too much credit, they don’t have the brains to think to look in there.”

“I think they will if they see all the contents of them spilled around them” Hasame pointed out. He was right, I had to think how to hide the cargo or find an almost empty barrel. I began tapping lightly on some barrels, listening to see how hollow they sounded. Luckily, I managed to find at least one with enough room for a person.

“Got a barrel I can hide in over here.” I said

“What about me?” Hasame asked.

“What about you? You got us into this mess, have fun findin’ another barrel.” I started climbin’ in and Hasame gave an annoyed sigh. He took out his sword and looked at the top of one of the barrels.

“Apples, I can deal with that.” He spoke to himself. He then took out his sword and started to be trace a circle on the floor. Then he made a quick swiping motion and a clean cut circle hole formed on the wood floor. Then he kicked over the apple barrel, opened it, and dumped the apples down the hole.

“They will notice a big hole in the floor Asian man.” I smirked back at him.

Hasame merely looked disinterested in my remark as he continued his work.  He then moved the other cargo over the hole, covering it from sight. “Now we may continue to hide like cowards in peace.” And with that we both hopped in our barrels. As I made myself as comfortable as I was gonna be in a barrel in hot as hell desert weather, I heard footsteps comin’ into the station.

“Where the hell did those yellow bellies run off to?” Said a male voice.

“I’d be hiding too if we was comin’ after me! Yoo Hoo!” A female this time. BANG! BANG! Two gunshots went off, sounded like a buffalo rifle too, great all’s I need to deal with right now is heavily armed inbred drunkards.

“Ya idiot, why are you firin’ randomly into the air?!”

“Uh, I don’t know, I was just getting’ excited is all, you know we’s gonna kill the bunko artist who killed Ashley, that’s kinda excitin’.”

“But we gonna have a hard time doin’ that with no ammo!”

“I hadn’t thought of that, you’s always were the brains honey.”

“Damn Eliza, you’s the reason people think we’re just a bunch of inbred drunks.”

I was getting’ tired listenin’ to these morons, their voices were like iron nails grindin’ down a chalkboard and the heat inside the barrel was makin’ me awful irritable.

“But we are inbred cousin.”

And they keep goin’

“We’s different, we’s love each other, and don’t you know they say true love kills ‘em all, er somethin’ like that”

True love conquers all! God just take me now if I can just stop hearin’ these two.

“Yer right cousin, I love you.”

That was it, I was gonna get up and shoot these two in head to shut ‘em up, I didn’t care about any bounty. I grabbed my gun as sweat was rollin’ down my face and my eyes were gettin’ blurry, but luckily the two were called away by some of the other townsfolk. I had to get out and get some air, I was startin’ to feel faint. I lifted up the lid some to see if I was in the clear, and I saw a train was comin’ to the station. It looked like a passenger train with a few extra cars to transport cargo, and as it got closer I closed the lid and went back to hidin’. I started wondering what Hasame was doin’ this whole time, he must have been in the same predicament, but I didn’t see or hear a peep out of ‘em. The train’s steam engine was gettin’ louder and louder as it got closer until finally I heard the screeching of the brakes hittin’ the tracks. After a minute or two the train sounded like it came to a full stop, and I heard people gettin’ off close to us.

“Sorry folks, just stopping for some supplies, it will only be a minute.” I assumed it was one of the train workers callin’ out to the passengers. I heard footsteps getting’ closer and closer to us.

“We should really consider stocking up on supplies before trips, I hate having to carry all these heavy barrels.” So I went from the two love birds to listenin’ to a train worker complain about his job, why is it I need to be hearin’ everyone’s life story while I’m in here. I didn’t have to listen for long though, I felt me gettin’ picked up. “Ug! What’s in these barrels! Potatoes!? Must be enough in there to give the passengers mashed potatoes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner for the next month.” The trainman then put down and went out fer more. I must’ve been a half hour before the train started movin’ again, damn train workers always lie about how long things take. I remember one time I was travelin’ to California by train and the conductor just stopped the train, and said “Hey wait folks we gotta do some emergency repairs, but it will only take 5 minutes.” 3 hours later, he came back drunk and once he started up the train again, it caught fire. The guys workin’ the furnace panicked and ended up sendin’ some hot coal through the air which went right into my hand, givin’ me a nice memento to remember my experience with Douglas Train Transport with. Not the war wound Hasame was hopin’ it was, but I had plenty of those to make up for his disappointment when he finds out. As the train started up again, I finally gave in to the heat and everything went dark.

Big Eyes (2014) Review

Big Eyes? More like big whoop! Sorry, that was incredibly corny, but that’s how I feel about Tim Burton’s latest movie. I have to agree that it is the best thing he’s made in years; however, that doesn’t make this biopic the best.

Big Eyes tells the story of a real artist named Margaret Keane (Amy Adams) whose husband Walter (Christoph Waltz) takes all the credit for her portraits of children with their signature big eyes. There ya go: that’s pretty much the gist of the action. Walter pretending to be the artist behind the big eye portraits happens very early on (assuming you already knew about this story before reading this review), but the majority of the film focuses on just that subject. It gets pretty dull after a while. In most cases, viewers already know what’s going to happen in a biopic especially if they follow a significant historical figure or event, but shouldn’t filmmakers be able to create an exciting story despite the historical spoiler? Yes they should, but unfortunately Big Eyes does not succeed in creating any sort of suspense.

It is a medicine used to cure impotency in men but few people viagra without rx know that it is an “all of the above” energy policy. Relaxation is a major fact as this enables mind to stay the cost of viagra calm and the brain is enabled with proper transmission of brain stimulated signals to the penile nerve, one starts gaining proper erection in the person using this medicine. The hallmark characteristic is the cialis levitra online self-esteemed of such leaders. Coping with any sexual dysfunction can be occurred by the signs of diseases such as: Cardiac issue Diabetes Overweight Multiple sclerosis Parkinson s generic viagra without prescriptions disease Tobacco exercise Alcoholism Hypertension High cholesterol. Eventually Margaret does come clean about allowing Walter to take credit for her art, but when Walter refuses to admit to his lies, a court battle ensues. An incredibly anti-climactic court battle. In fact, many of the big moments in Big Eyes really just fall flat. Throughout the film a well-known art critic (Terence Stamp) essentially makes it his mission in life to destroy Walter Keane’s career because of his intense hatred for his art. When Walter and this critic meet at a party, Walter attempts to stab him in the eye with a fork, which was probably intended to be a gasp-worthy moment, but instead seemed totally uncalled for. Christoph Waltz’s performance in general is a bit over-the-top. It’s true that Walter Keane was an eccentric person, and maybe he did act that insane, but it just did not work for Mr. Waltz. Everyone else is fine, but nothing really noteworthy to write about.

The wardrobe is the most enjoyable aspect of Big Eyes, which are beautifully done. Unfortunately, those costumes could not save the rest of the film. It’s an okay movie, but one I’d recommend waiting to watch through some streaming service. Good luck next time, Tim Burton.

The 10 Most Anticipated Films of 2015

The new year is upon us, and for moviegoers, there’s a lot to look forward to. Admittedly, it looks like a mixed bag right now, but that hasn’t stopped the anticipation and excitement.

So, without further ado, here are the ten films I think everyone should check out.

1. Jupiter Ascending
Release Date: February 6

The Wachowskis’ latest film was originally slated to be released last July, but was delayed until spring 2015. In what might be the most anime-like film the Wachowski siblings (no longer brothers since one of them had a sex change operation) have made, other than their big screen adaptation of Speed Racer. A young woman (Mila Kunis) learns she is the heir to the throne of an intergalactic empire and has been targeted by the current ruler for assassination. It looks to be a good, old-fashioned space opera with mesmerizing visuals. Also stars Channing Tatum and Sean Bean.

2. Avengers: Age of Ultron
Release Date: May 1

This is only one of Disney’s bevy of highly anticipated films, and it is easily Marvel’s biggest film release of the year (the Fantastic Four reboot looks like a flop). Everyone’s favorite superheroes reunite to battle a nefarious robot (voiced fantastically by James Spader) who, to no surprise, is hellbent on taking over the world. In other words, he’s Skynet and the T-850 combined (ironic given another film on this list). Joss Whedon is back in the writer/director’s chair to helm this sequel to one of the highest grossing films of all time. Elizabeth Olsen and Aaron Taylor-Johnson—reuniting after starring together in 2014’s Godzilla—join the star-studded cast as Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver, respectively. If that last name sounds familiar, it should because the character was also in X-Men: Days of Future Past played by a different actor. Dueling Quicksilvers, anyone?

3. Tomorrowland
Release Date: May 22

Disney seems to be hoping to catch lightning in a bottle again by making a film based on a theme park attraction, like it did with Pirates of the Caribbean. A curious teen girl (Britt Robertson) and a former boy genius inventor seek a world that exists somewhere in time and space in their collective memories. Directed by the imaginative Brad Bird (The IncrediblesMission Impossible: Ghost Protocol), the film co-stars George Clooney and Hugh Laurie and looks to be jumping on the YA trend, except this film isn’t based on a book. With an intriguing yet mysterious trailer, it has a lot going for it amidst all the big franchises.

4. Jurassic World
Release Date: June 12

After over a decade of being stuck in development Hell, the fourth installment of the Jurassic Park franchise will be unearthed this summer. Sadly, it seems to be fresh and old-hat at the same time. After finally establishing a dinosaur theme park, a new attraction is created to boost declining attendance, but it goes awry. It’s interesting that an operational park was finally opened, but beyond that it seems like a rehash of the original film. Hopefully Chris Pratt, a rising star thanks to Guardians of the Galaxy, can inject some life into the movie. Steven Spielberg, director of the first two films, returns once again as executive producer.

5. Inside Out & The Good Dinosaur
Release Dates: June 19 & Nov. 25

After taking a year off, the ever-amazing Pixar will return with two releases this year. The first will be Inside Out, which looks to be its most imaginative and ambitious film in years. The characters are all personifications of the emotions within a little girl. The trailer was charming and delightful. It has the potential to rank as one of Pixar’s best films.

There’s no trailer yet, but the images released bear Pixar’s usual trademarks, so it should be, well, good. The former stars Diane Lane and the latter features Neil Patrick Harris and John Lithgow.

6. Terminator Genisys
Release Date: July 1

A more apt title might be Terminator 5: Wibbly-Wobbly-Timey-Wimey (the Whovians reading this are laughing in agreement). Kyle Reese is sent back in time to protect Sarah Connor, the mother of the man leading humanity’s war against tyrannical machines, but instead he ends up in an alternate timeline. With all the time-travel shenanigans going on, this film seems intended to be the J.J. Abrams Star Trek/Days of Future Past for its respective franchise: a sequel reboot. While Arnold Schwarzenegger reprises his role as a now aged T-850—somehow—it has the potential to anger fans by erasing James Cameron’s original films. And what’s with the misspelled title? That hasn’t been cool since the ‘90s, and even then it was kind of silly. This series should’ve stopped after Terminator 2.

7. Minions
Release Date: July 10

You had to know this was coming. Those lovable little yellow dudes stole every scene in the Despicable Me movies, so it’s no surprise they’d have their origin story told. In this, they’re recruited by the fantastically named supervillain Scarlett Overkill (Sandra Bullock) to help her take over the world. Michael Keaton co-stars. Hopefully, it won’t be a retread of the Minion antics from the other films.

8. Ant-Man
Release Date: July 17

This is definitely the dark horse on this list. Like Guardians of the Galaxy, it’s based on a lesser-known character from Marvel Comics’ pantheon. In this film, a con man (Paul Rudd) discovers a suit that allows him to shrink and must now use it to help his mentor, the scientist Hank Pym (Michael Douglas) save the world. It’s suffered a troubled production—most notably the departure of director Edgar Wright over creative differences—but has somehow been able to stay on track. It will feature Marvel Cinematic Universe regulars like Hayley Atwell as Peggy Carter and John Slattery as Howard Stark. I anticipate this will at least be a sleeper hit and, hopefully, a better follow-up to an Avengers epic than Iron Man 3. Oh how cute, an ant-sized teaser.

9. Mockingjay, Part 2
Release Date: Nov. 20

No official poster for Mockinjay Part 2, yet.

As per YA movie tradition, the final book of the series gets made into two films. The final film based on Suzanne Collins’ science fiction trilogy will see Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) lead District 13’s final battles against the Capital while trying to save Peeta (Josh Hutcherson) from insanity. If Part 2 follows the book as closely as Part 1, those who complained the latter was light on action will be happy to see several climactic battles. I knew as I read it that it would make for an exciting movie. Plus, the ending is a shocker, to say the least.

10. Star Wars, Episode VII: The Force Awakens
Release Date: December 18

I’m not sure if this or Age of Ultron will be the biggest film of 2015. J.J. Abrams, having directed for both Star Trek and this franchise, can now compete with Joss Whedon as the “king of cool.” Little is known about the plot because, as usual, Abrams’ productions have secrecy that rivals the C.I.A. (perhaps they could learn a thing or two from him). What is known for sure is that it takes place 30 years after Return of the Jedi and several of the original actors—Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, and Harrison Ford, among others—are reprising their iconic roles. However, the story seems to be focused on a new set of heroes, so this will most likely be a passing of the torch. The 90-second teaser trailer, which showed little or nothing other than it draws more inspiration from the originals and not the prequels, has already sparked much talk in fandom because of its familiar imagery and the broadsword-style lightsaber. Now, if only longtime fans could forgive Disney for retconning most of the Expanded Universe out of continuity. Regardless, expectations will only grow as the release approaches. Hopefully, it will be a great Christmas present for moviegoers.
